Semi-automatic firearm - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
A semi-automatic firearm is one that requires only a trigger pull for each round that is fired, unlike a single-action revolver, a pump-action firearm, a bolt-action firearm, or a lever-action firearm, which require the shooter to manually chamber each successive round.
For instance, if someone were to shoot ten rounds in a semi-automatic firearm, he would need to pull the trigger ten times (once for each round fired), as opposed to a fully-automatic firearm, which will continue to fire as long as the trigger is held or until it runs out of ammunition.
Firearms firing bursts of more than one round (usually three) per pull of the trigger, such as the M16A2 rifle, are generally considered fully-automatic.

Types of Operation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The term "break action" covers action types in which the barrel is "broken" from the breech block by use of a hinge.
Quite possibly the simplest type of firearm action, this type is most commonly found on double-barreled shotguns of the "over/under" or "side-by-side" type, though single-barreled weapons may be found, such as the M79 grenade launcher.
Internal operation is essentially the same as a lever action, though externally, the shooter interfaces with a slide mechanism mounted parallel to and underneath the barrel, which usually surrounds a tubular magazine.

 Impressed Action Marks- FirearmsID.com
Firing pin impressions are indentations created when the firing pin of a firearm strikes the primer of centerfire cartridge case or the rim of a rimfire cartridge case.
Recoil is for the most part caused by the cartridge case moving rearward as an opposite reaction to the pressures generated to force the bullet down the barrel.
Ejector marks can be either striated or impressed but the impressed ejector marks not only can be used to identify a cartridge case as having passed through a firearm's action they can also be an indication that the cartridge case was fired in the firearm.

However, the use of this term in the statute introduces another element of vagueness since the "action" is neither a part nor a specific location on a firearm..
