Whilst the Fireball stand will undoubtedly be the Mecca for most sailors the show is worth a visit just to see what is happening in the dinghy world generally, meet old friends and have a few beers.

There are other dinghies that are faster in some conditions, or on some angles, but no other high performance dinghy is blessed with the all round high performance and ease of sailing that the 505 has.
The Fireball is close to a 470 in sail area and size; the 505 is faster, better handling in rough water.
The narrower and lower Fireball is fast, and feels faster than it is. As the Portsmouth numbers indicate, the 505 is faster, though the Fireball probably sails to its rating best in windy flat water.

Mirrors and larger dinghies allowed the least experienced to start with adults at the helm, but by midweek the young crews had mutinied and were demanding to sail Toppers on their own.
The faster Fireball, sailed by Bill Munnery and John Mortimer, found some speed on the second lap to finish second on the water, but the chasing Rookers and Dawbers had made good speed after their respective poor starts to claim the second and third spots on corrected time.
In all, 25 dinghies competed in the series, but the many "did not finish" markings on the results sheet were a confirmation of the rough weather.

Fireball News: Ex-chairman Chesney - there seems to be some disagreement between yourself and the big wigs at HQ over whether you've resigned or been pushed, would you like to comment on that ?.
Trident, an established name on the national dinghy scene as manufacturer and supplier to the dinghy world, have designed and are now manufacturing their own trailers - they wanted a trailer that did the job and was excellent value for money.
Those Fireball sailors that I have spoken to at Fishers Green seem to be in favour of experimenting with this option.

The fireball class in Ireland is committed to training running several sessions around the country each year aimed at different levels to help raise the standards of sailing in Ireland.

Came across a fireball today...been stored for the last 15 yrs...rig appears mint and boat looks to be ok...what are they like to sail...anyone have any info on these...
I suppose you could say that a Fireball was the 70s equivalent of a skiff in the Northern hemisphere in that the equivalent sorts of people who now sail SMODs that they believe are skiffs then would have probably sailed Fireballs (or 505s), but in no other sense at all.
By contrast the Fireball looks the same, but was orginally designed as a cheap boat with a strong self build element.

It's common knowledge that Florida waters are a popular winter destination for many of the one-design dinghy fleets across the United States as regional clubs host dozens of midwinter championships for snowbound boats and sailors.
Tampa's Davis Island Yacht Club, which has for years hosted a midwinter event for usually less than a dozen Fireballs, put together a comprehensive two weeks of racing and relaxing, which attracted the top racers from all corners of the globe.

Yet another huge Irish Fireball fleet turnout at Galway Bay SC for the Open Championships showing once again that it is the only dinghy fleet which is continually growing and getting large numbers to all its events.
Day one of the weekend started with almost perfect fireball sailing conditions for the 29 boats that turned out for the event — 15-20 knots and 25ºC bright sunshine.
Newtownards SC was the most welcoming of hosts for the Fireball fleet for the Ulster Championships.
