Fireball XL5 is an early Gerry Anderson series from 1962, filmed in fl and white in "Supermarionation" (ie using puppets).
Fireball XL5 was also made before they had developed the "invisible" puppet strings used in Thunderbirds — not strictly invisible of course, but certainly less evident than they are here in Fireball XL5.
However, it is the strength of the material in Fireball XL5, the charm of the plots and the characters that, like Stingray and Thunderbirds, manages to overcome the limitations of the puppetry.

Fireball XL5, the sequel to Supercar marks the start of the truly great Anderson-produced puppet show.
The premise for Fireball XL5 is hardly rocket science - Steve Zodiac is the pilot of the eponymous rocket, a fantastic craft that takes our hero deep into space where he faces the mysteries and dangers of the unknown.
In truth Fireball XL5 is not as well made as its immediate successor, Stingray, but its production values are still very high and speak of a time when children’s TV was lavished with a level of care that is sadly lacking today.

Considering the international success of the hit TV show ‘Fireball XL5’ in the early 1960’s and its built in marketing potential, there were actually very few toys or models produced of the series’ star rocket ship.
When the XL5 rocket was launched skywards, the aerodynamic force held a ‘balance arm’ close to the underbelly of the rocket’s fuselage.
The hollow nosecone, (Fireball Junior) looked very similar to the TV ship but it was made of yellow, pliable plastic — probably to absorb any direct impact or collision and to aid in visually locating the landed rocket by its contrasting color.
