In past decades these cars were shunned as "gas guzzlers", but it was lack of sales that eventually led to their demise.
The Firebird is also 35 years old, introduced in 1967, yet it was not until 1980 that the car was chosen to pace the Indy 500, and it has led the race only twice in its history.
All three of these cars would be at home on the racetrack, but each has led the Indy 500 within the past six years and none offer any dramatic changes since their last visit.

The car's low height and swoopy shape result in a low-down, close-to-the-floor seating position, with your legs and feet stretched out in front of you; it may not be everyone's delight.
In front, the Firebird has upper and lower control arms instead of struts--a big plus--and in back the axle is properly located, with twin trailing links, a Panhard rod for lateral positioning and a long torque arm that controls axle driving and braking torque.
On the debit side, the ride is not as soft as some sporty cars; whether the Firebird's ride is objectionable is a matter of personal preference.

Welcome To The Retro Future   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
With seven aerodynamic fins and a double-canopy cockpit, the Firebird III was 1958's "car of the future." Over four decades later, the car'sconceptual underpinnings are still radically ahead-of-their-time.
The Firebird III was chock full of space-age innovations: special drag brakes which emerged from flat panels to slow the car at high speeds, an "ultra-sonic" key which signaled the body panel (i.e., the doors) to swing open, an automated guidance system to avoid accidents and "no hold" steering.
One was Unicontrol, a mouse-like instrument which substituted for steering-wheel, transmission, throttle and brake (shifting it left turned the car left, shifting it right turned the car right, back applied the brakes and forward put the car into reverse).

 History/Background
In 1953, GM began an extensive test program with a radical vehicle, the XP-21, which later became known as Firebird I. The name capitalized on the hot jet exhaust and the aircraft styling upon which the car is based.
Two more turbine-powered cars were built throughout the 1950's and there are records of a Firebird IV, although it may have served primarily as a styling exercise in the early 1960's.
The history of the Firebird might have ended right here, had it not been for the advent of two fortunate circumstances: an affluent youth buyers market and the desire for a stylish and powerful car to satisfy the demand of this market.
