Fireboats are used to extinguish fires on docks, structures on land adjacent to a given body of water, and on other boats.
The fireboat was also used to give firefighters at Ground Zero water to put out fires there, which was the only water available to them because the water mains leading to the World Trade Center were eliminated because of the Twin Towers collapse.

The 1929 fireboat Fireboat No. 1, owned and maintained by the City of Tacoma, Washington, as a historic monument and museum, is an excellent example of a typical, specifically-designed fireboat as could be found in any major American port city through much of the 20th century.
The need for full-time fireboats and for maximum capability for combating serious blazes on wooden ships and wooden waterfronts of the late 19th and early 20th century compelled many fire departments in port cities to design and construct their own fireboats.
In 1927, typical fireboats in the United States were described as having the same general dimensions and hull lines of those of a harbor towboat.

Fireboat No. 1 was built in 1929 by the Coastline Shipbuilding Company of Tacoma for $148,000.
The vessel was one of the first on the West Coast built specifically as a fireboat, rather than converted from a tugboat.
Fireboat No. 1 is the only fireboat in US history to protect a major port by itself for more than half a century.
