  Firebombing Japan
Firebombing of Japanese Cities during World War II One of the areas that almost everyone knows about concerning World War II is the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The firebombing went so well, in fact, that the military was actually running out of reasonable targets to firebomb and an estimate by General LeMay said they would run out of targets by Christmas of 1945.
On the other hand, firebombing a swath of land maybe fifty or sixty miles wide coupled with firebombing all the farm areas could possibly have cleared an area enough that the U.S. military could have gotten a beachhold without horrible casualties.

  The Militant - March 28, 2005 -- U.S. firebombing of Tokyo in 1945 killed 100,000
Some of the facts about the 1945 U.S. firebombings of Tokyo are being forced into the light of day, in spite of decades of cover-up by the U.S. rulers, with the complicity of their counterparts in Japan.
The firebombing attacks were brought to an end as the U.S. rulers rushed to unleash their newest weapon.
Meanwhile, the myth was propagated that the atomic bombing, like the firebombing campaign, was necessary to “save American lives” and bring the war to an end.

 "Just like the firebombing..."
Right off the bat, I was struck by the oddity (from my experience) of a generation for whom a firebombing is a yardstick by which to measure (and not in an exclusionary sense) the gravity of a situation.
Indeed, for much of the postwar years, the notion of the war as a sui generis experience seems to have been at the core of the Japanese peace movement's strategy for convincing younger generations that the horrors of war are beyond their imagination and, therefore, best avoided.
But when the memory of the firebombing becomes indelibly linked to the phenomenon of fires in general (regardless of whether its initial function was to render the fires imaginable), the agency of the Americans itself also slips into the haze.

ZNet |Japan | Firebombing and Atom Bombing
The firebombing of Tokyo, or for that matter the bombing of any city, whether it be Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Dresden or London, cannot be fully comprehended unless it is examined in the context of the history of indiscriminate bombing throughout the twentieth century.
Indiscriminate bombing of civilians during major warfare was first conducted by both the German and the Allied forces during World War I. Initially both sides refrained from targeting civilians or residential areas, but due to the rudimentary nature of their aircraft and aerial bombing techniques, bombs inevitably went astray, killing civilians in their wake.
In the end, more than 100 Japanese cities were destroyed by firebombing, and two by atomic bombing, causing one million casualties, including more than half a million deaths, the majority being civilians, particularly women and children.
