Firefly: FOX Original Television Series Premiere Episode "The Train Job" Review
Perhaps one of the most eagerly anticipated new genre series set to premiere on non-cable broadcast network television is Joss Whedon’s “Firefly.” Set approximately five hundred or so years in the future, “Firefly” at least in part refers to the type of vessel our protagonists fly around in.
It is a “Firefly” class mid bulk carrier without weapons named “Serenity.” The crew is a mixed bag of frontier fugitives trying to make a living on the outskirts of known space a few years after an interstellar civil war crushed a separatist movement.
Now Whedon, who penned “Alien Resurrection” has turned his eyes back to the future and the stars and resurrected the spirit of the classic western TV series and combined it with what may or may not be a space opera.

Firefly was all about life on the frontier of space and the freedom of having a ship to call your own and only yourself to answer to.
No aliens are included in the series as humans can be alien enough when left on their own and away from most justice and organized systems.
One of the best series to come along in a while with interesting characters and great plots, it naturally didn’t last long.

I had heard of Firefly when it first aired and it was one of those shows that I meant to watch, tivo, etc but never got around to it until it was too late.
Firefly operates on a much more intimate scale (not so true of "Serenity" of course, but even there, the best parts of the movie were interactions between two or three characters).
Firefly on the other hand is more reminiscent of the best parts of "Deadwood" and interior of the Nebuchadnezzer on "The Matrix" mixed together.

Firefly: The Complete Series | The A.V. Club
The science-fiction/Western TV series Firefly was admittedly crowded, pretentious, and too innovative to be a guaranteed success, but Fox bears much of the blame for its failure.
By airing the episodes out of order, withholding the pilot until months after the series launched, sticking the show with a difficult time slot, limiting network advertising support, and canceling the show partway through its initial run, Fox publicly declared that Firefly was a risk not worth taking.
Firefly's two-episode opener takes an admirably relaxed (but TV-lethal) pace in establishing its initially unwieldy cast, beginning with Nathan Fillon, captain and owner of the rickety "Firefly-class" spaceship Serenity.

To call Firefly a space-western is an oversimplification that touches upon the set-dressing in which a tale of intimate and epic proportions unfolds itself.
"What makes [Firefly] work is Whedon's delightfully well-chosen cast and their nine subtly-developed characters (a typically Whedon-esque extended family), each providing a unique perspective on their adventures aboard Serenity, the junky but beloved "Firefly-class" starship they call home.
They're renegades with an amoral agenda, taking any job that pays well, but Firefly's complex tapestry of right and wrong (and peace vs. violence) is richer and deeper than it first appears.

As the 2005 theatrical release of Serenity made clear, Firefly was a science fiction concept that deserved a second chance.
Creator Joss Whedon's ambitious science-fiction Western (Whedon's third series after Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel) was canceled after only 11 of these 14 episodes had aired on the Fox network, but history has proven that its demise was woefully premature.
Tantalizing clues about Blue Sun (an insidious mega-corporation with a mysteriously evil agenda), its ties to the Alliance, and the traumatizing use of Serenity's resident stowaway (Summer Glau) as a guinea pig in the development of advanced warfare were clear indications Firefly was heading for exciting revelations that were precluded by the series' cancellation.

Much praised and much missed after its premature cancellation, Firefly is the first SF TV series to be conceived by Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy and cocreator of Angel.
