GSR Rules 178-188   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Where it is necessary for the Guard and Fireman to proceed towards each other for the purpose of ascertaining thether the opposite line is obstructed they must proceed along the off side (right-hand side in the running direction) of their train wherever practicable.
After the first portion of the train has been disposed of, the engine must return on the proper line, with the brake van, for the purpose of working forward the other portion of the train which has been left behind, and the brake van must, in that case also, be attached in the rear.
After sunset, or during fog or falling snow, or it the disabled train is left in a tunnel, the Fireman when proceeding to the signal box in advance must place 3 detonators, 10 yards apart, on the line not less than 100 yards ahead of the disabled train.

stop his train with care, pauing particular attention to the state of the weather, the condition of the rails and the gradient, as well as to the length and weight of the train.
The Guard's signal to the Fireman must be shown from the Guard's van and by day will be given by holding one arm in the horizontal position, and at night or during fog or falling snow by waving a green light slowly from side to side.
If the train is not fitted with the continuous brake he must apply his hand brake sharply, and release it suddenly; this operation repeated several times should, from the check it causes, attract the attention of the Driver, to whom the necessary Danger signal must be exhibited.

The conductor was the captain of the train.
Train crews and passengers alike were now fearful that they could become the next victims of the now infamous train robbing James Gang.
As Jesse James got off the train, he tossed the conductor his gold watch, saying "You'll need this." A posse was organized in Piedmont to go after the gang, but by the time it was organized, the James Gang was over sixty miles away.

So you want to be a railroad fireman? - Trains.com Forums
I read a good bit of it and found it interesting, though a lot of the terms were unfamilar..
Of all the jobs on a steam-era railroad, I always thought the fireman had it the worst, particularly when they talk about shoving tons of coal per trip...
P.S. my grandfather was a fireman on the PRR Low Grade Line back in the steam days, then became an engineer after they dieselized.

Conductor, brakeman, or? - Trains.com Forums
Passenger trains on the road had a Conductor, brakeman and perhaps a flagman.
Now freight trains on the road are just and engineer and a conductor except on some locals and some railroads where there are two engineers.
In some cases Freight Trains will run with a brakeman if there is a certain amount of work that will be done en route, this rarely happends as the railway doesn't want to run 3 man crews, so they always keep work en route to a minimum.

 I Luv Locos.
Let me share with you my love of trains; trains hauled by steam locomotives that is. This page looks at steam with an adult perspective before we regress back to being a wide-eyed 7 yr old going for a holiday on a steam-train.
While I was recording a D59 class Steam-loco waiting to start a push, the diesel driver (in his late forties) was walking along the adjacent line and chided the steam-loco driver (in his early forties) as he passed.
The young fireman spent most of the trip watching the exhaust coming out of the chimney and continuously adjusting the steam-powered mechanical stoker, coalspreader and firebox door to minimise any excess smoke.

 Casey Jones Accident Report
Fireman Webb states that after talking with Jones, he stepped down to the deck to put in a fire; and just as he was in the act of stooping for the shovel, he heard the explosion of the torpedo.
He then called to the engineer,Jones, that there was a train ahead, and feeling that the engineer would not be able to stop the train in time to prevent an accident, told him that he was going to jump off, which he did about 300 feet from the caboose of No. 83.
Fireman Webb further states that when the torpedo exploded, train No. l was running about 75 miles per hour; that Engineer Jones immediately applied the air brakes and that when he left, the engine speed had been reduced to about 50 miles per hour.

 Saluda Grade Trains Mag
Engineers on descending trains were required to blow one long, one short, and one long at the whistle board 800 feet from the safety track if their train was under control.
A stalled train would mean time lost on the schedule; difficulty in starting a train on the steep grade without burning the rails; and a chance of damaging valve gear or flattening driver wheels if they went into a spin.
When the entire train has executed the crest, the train speed will be controlled not to exceed 8 mph by maximum use of the dynamic brake and repeated brake applications and releases until the train has descended the grade.

A fireman needed to know the basic elements of combustion, and also needed to know the type and class of locomotive they were firing.
The fireman generally needed to maintain a “light and bright” fire and “stoked” his engine with strategically placed scoops of coal, making sure the whole grate was covered but not overly so, and keeping the corners and sides a bit deeper than the middle sections.

Trains lst 72, 83, lst 26 and 2nd 26 were at Vaughan Station for No. 2; lst and 2nd 26 occupied the house track which was clear, and lst 72 and 83 occupied the passing track, which lacked about l0 car lenghts of holding the two trains.

 "Steam” by Elmer Rhodes
For trains outbound east, climbing the three or four mile grade from the valley floor to the cut through Red Mountain at Irondale, the fire door opened every few seconds, as the fireman rhythmically shoveled coal.
On earlier, smaller locomotives the fireman could swing open the fire door from time to time to tend the fire, but the engines grew so big that by the time of my childhood the fireman was the bottleneck in power production; the treadle operated door was absolutely necessary.
Seldom was it evident that a train crew gave a hoot about maintaining a schedule, and too, too often trainmen were adverse to common courtesy to their passengers, their customers.
