Dragons (Pern) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Dragons of Pern are a fictional race created by Anne McCaffrey as an integral part of the science fiction world depicted in her Dragonriders of Pern novels.
All brownriders in the Pern novels are men, but Anne McCaffrey's guidelines for Pern-based online role-playing state that it is theoretically possible for browns to Impress to women, although she has no plans for female brownriders to appear in the books.
Ramoth is the largest dragon in Pern's history, and together with Lessa rediscovers the lost knowledge that dragons are capable of time travel.

Dragonriders of Pern   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Dragonriders are an elite of society, chosen for their ability to communicate with the giant sentient dragons, bred by the early Earth-colonizers of Pern to chew firestone and burn in the air the deadly mycorrhizoid spore threads that periodically rain down on the planet.
The social structure on Pern is strictly divided between Hall, Hold, and Weyr--broadly comparable to the medieval triune of Church, Nobility, and Guild--and is considered by the Pernese themselves to be an ideal organization specifically meant to avoid the violence and excess of their terran ancestors.
Pern creates an interesting problem in that it is an agrarian society portrayed without considerable organized religion.

The planet Pern is inhabited by a wide variety of hexapedal variations of familiar life-forms: six-limbed birds, six-limbed "reptiles," etc. The most amazing creatures on this planet are the so-called dragons of Pern, and their variations.
Pern dragons are much larger than normal dragons, and come in five different colors (from smallest to largest): green, blue, brown, bronze, and gold.
Due to their similarities to other dragon-like forms on Pern, it is believed that at some point a wizard had magically experimented on or crossbred creatures that eventually became several distinct types of creatures.

The Masterharper of Pern is resonsible for the traing of harpers, the appointment of trained harpers to Weyr, hold, hall and cot, and the disipline of harpers.
Among her duties are the care of the young; the supervision of food collection, storage, and preparation; weyr maintenance; and nursing, under the aegis of the Weyr healer(s).

Firestone is the phosphine-bearing rock found about Pern which is used by dragons and firelizards to create their flame.
Shinier firestone usually indicates a higher concentration of firestone while more dull firestone is simply not as condensed and contains more carbonate and silicate and therefore is not as powerful.
The chunks of firestone should be smashed so that they will fit well enough in a dragon's mouth, but not be so small that dozens of rocks must be fed to the dragon before it can be effective.

 HT Introduction
Pern is a very low-tech, agrarian world; there is no industry, no complex machinery, not even electricity.
In exchange for the Weyr's protection against Threadfall, the Holds in a Weyr's territory donate food and clothing and materials to keep the Weyr's population alive, since dragonriders are too busy fighting thread and caring for their dragons to raise crops or produce things essential to living.
We have not built Pern in its entirety, because we lack the players to populate such a large virtual space, and we also feel that a smaller environment leads to more roleplay and better interaction among players.

Firestone: A mineral found naturally on Pern that is masticated by Thread-fighting dragons and stored in a special stomach, where it mixes with acids and reacts, producing a flammable gas (phosphine).
Small chunks of firestone are necessary, at first, until the weyrling learns their dragon’s capacity and the dragon begins to understand the process.
Also, be sure to caution the dragonets against turning their heads too much when flaming, and being aware of themselves and the dragons around them – it isn’t unheard of for a dragon to singe their own wingtip, or even the dragon beside them.

When the call is given to collect firestone, he steps forward to the pile and carefully sorts through about a quarter of it before he's found three pieces that fit his and Cantaneth's criteria for both size and purity.
Eventually, the firestone does the trick, and the dainty green opens her mouth to push out a small but bright burst of flame, gone as quickly as it appeared.

However, since gold Firelizards ingest Firestone, flame and still bear live clutches, it is believed there is something in the genetic makeup of a green Dragon that makes her sterile, and not the Firestone.

It may well be that the greens act like a woman with severe PMS on some berserker drug unless they're given firestone within a certain limit of time, to ensure that no green dragon ever rose to mate without being exposed to it first.
That would still make it a possibility that the trigger would be left alone in case all the queens on Pern were dead, although of course it would be very unlikely, as the tradition of giving greens firestone would be so strong.
