Firestone Tire and Rubber Company - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Firestone Tire and Rubber Company was founded by Harvey Firestone at the turn of the 20th century to supply pneumatic tires for wagons, buggies, and other forms of wheeled transportation common in the era.
Firestone was originally based in Akron, Ohio, also the hometown of its archrival, Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company.
Firestone first asserted that only 400,000 tires produced at the Decatur plant were defective.

PUBLISHED OPINION OF POTTER VS. FIRESTONE, FEAR OF CANCER CAUSE OF ACTION NEGLIGENT AND INTENTIONAL INFLICTION OF ...
Firestone appealed, arguing that the damage awards were not supported by any of the legal theories relied on by the trial court and that the evidence was insufficient to support the trial court's findings.
Finally, Firestone argued that the trial court had erred in admitting and considering irrelevant evidence, that plaintiffs' comparative negligence had not been considered, that compensation for "disruption" of plaintiffs' lives was improper in an action in which property damages are not recoverable, fn.
Firestone and numerous amici curiae argue that because fear of cancer claims are linked to a future harm which may or may not materialize, such claims raise concerns about speculation and uncertainty and therefore warrant a requirement that the plaintiff show the feared cancer is more likely than not to occur.

GEORGE HEALEY, JR., RESPONDENT, v. THE FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER COMPANY, &C., APPELLANT, AND ALL-INN TRUCKING, ...
Indeed, in a subsequent affidavit Biassi averred that tires and rims on the All-Inn trucks were changed frequently because of severe use on equipment primarily driven to haul dirt and gravel over rough terrain, and that broken and worn-out rims were discarded without any inventory control.
Thus, Biassi's evidence raised a substantial question as to whether the actual rim that explosively separated to cause plaintiff's injuries remained in the possession of All-Inn during the subsequent inspections of the rims on its trucks and at its premises by plaintiff's experts.
Equally unavailing to prove identity of the manufacturer was the affidavit of plaintiff's expert Hahn regarding his December 7, l99l examination of the rims on all l0 of All-Inn's trucks and the spare rims on its premises.

Firestone, a salesman for the Columbus Buggy Company in Detroit, was determined to design a tire that would be more comfortable to drive on.
The pneumatic tire was designed as an alternative to the solid rubber tire because it gave vehicles a much smoother ride.
Firestone quickly realized the potential for this type of tire, and in 1906 contacted Henry Ford about supplying pneumatic tires for his automobiles.

FindLaw for Legal Professionals - Case Law, Federal and State Resources, Forms, and Code
After Firestone sold its Plastics Division to Occidental Petroleum Co. (Occidental), respondents, Plastics Division employees who were rehired by Occidental, sought severance benefits under the termination pay plan, but Firestone denied their requests on the ground that there had not been a "reduction in work force" that would authorize benefits under the plan's terms.
Firestone was the sole source of funding for the plans and had not established separate trust funds out of which to pay the benefits from the plans.
Firestone can seek no shelter in these principles of trust law, however, for there is no evidence that under Firestone's termination pay plan the administrator has the power to construe uncertain terms or that eligibility determinations are to be given deference.

 99-6100 -- Thompson v. Firestone Tire & Rubber Company -- 01/06/2000
She alleged that she was wrongfully terminated in retaliation for having filed a workers' compensation claim and because of a perceived disability after sustaining an on-the-job injury to her left arm, left shoulder, and neck.
Defendant claimed that it laid plaintiff off because she could no longer perform her assigned job of tire sorter, because it was not obligated to reassign her to another job, and because, even if it was so obligated, there were no other jobs at the plant that she could perform with her medical restrictions.
On appeal, plaintiff argues that she established a prima facie case of workers' compensation retaliatory discharge and produced sufficient evidence from which it could be inferred that defendant's explanation for her layoff was unworthy of credence.

Firestone and Ford tire controversy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ford and Firestone have both blamed the other for the failures, which has led to the severing of relations between the two companies.
Firestone has claimed that they have found no faults in design nor manufacture, and that failures have been caused by Ford's recommended tire pressure being too low and the Explorer's design.
Lawyers for the plaintiffs have argued that both Ford and Firestone knew of the dangers but did nothing, and that specifically Ford knew that the Explorer was highly prone to rollovers.

With regard to Firestone the court instructed: "Your verdict concerning the defendant, Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, will be by your answer to the Interrogatory and their [sic] rights or liabilities will be determined as a matter of law upon that answer."
This conclusion - that the jury merely found Firestone did not repair the flat in question - is reinforced by the fact that the jury turned right around and found that "the truck was in fact defective" by returning a verdict against Hertz.
Firestone placed in evidence a series of records consisting of Hertz purchase orders and Firestone invoices which described in detail each tire job for Hertz including what was done, when it was done, and the number of the truck it was done on.
