Firewall (construction) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-17)
In construction, a firewall consists of a windowless, fireproof wall (or a wall of substantially heavier construction than other walls in a building) built to prevent fire from spreading beyond one section of a building.
Firewalls are also regularly found in aircraft and in specially prepared cars for competition use.
Firewalls have to be fitted so that they form a complete seal — usually this is done by bonding the metal sheet to the bodywork using fiberglass resin.

Firewall (networking) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In computing, a firewall is a piece of hardware and/or software which functions in a networked environment to prevent some communications forbidden by the security policy, analogous to the function of firewalls in building construction.
Application-layer firewalls work on the application level of the TCP/IP stack (i.e., all browser traffic, or all telnet or ftp traffic), and may intercept all packets traveling to or from an application.
Firewalls often have network address translation (NAT) functionality, and the hosts protected behind a firewall commonly use so-called "private address space", as defined in RFC 1918.

In the traditional meaning in construction, a firewall consists of a windowless, fireproof wall (or a wall of substantially heavier construction than other walls in the building) built to prevent fire from spreading beyond one section of a building.
By extension, the computing world uses the term firewall for a piece of hardware or software which functions in a networked environment to prevent some communications forbidden by the network policy.
Firewalls often have network address translation functionality, and the hosts protected behind a firewall commonly use so-called "private address space", as defined in RFC 1918.

Firewalls do not provide any protection once an attacker has gotten past them." [2] Firewalls are generally thought of as mechanisms at the boundary between what is generally 'open' to the public and what is considered 'restricted' or private territory.
Firewalls can be used to provide segregation and protective isolation between various internal network segments as well, where analysis has shown that there may be little value and an increased security risk in allowing unlimited and unmonitored connectivity and data transfer.
This is one of the primary purposes of a firewall.

 Understanding Firewall Basics
Firewalls are required in buildings to satisfy the life safety mandates of both national and local building and fire codes.
Firewalls should be designed and built with materials that have met the requirements of ASTM E 119 (Standard Method of Fire Testing of Building Construction and Materials).
That is, the structural steel must be constructed to support all loads in the presence of a fire or absence of the structure on the opposite side of the wall.

If the firewall process is used, the client communication handler should be initialized with the TCP/IP address and the port number of the firewall process.
Firewall Process: The firewall process requires a port number and the name of a firewall configuration file as input.

 Internet Firewalls: Frequently Asked Questions
Firewalls provide an important logging and auditing function; often they provide summaries to the administrator about what kinds and amount of traffic passed through it, how many attempts there were to break into it, etc.
Although firewalls can help to mitigate some of the risks present on an Internet without authentication or encryption, there are really two classes of problems here: integrity and privacy of the information flowing between hosts and the limits placed on what kinds of connectivity is allowed between different networks.
Firewalls with end-to-end encryption can be used by organizations with multiple points of Internet connectivity to use the Internet as a ``private backbone'' without worrying about their data or passwords being sniffed.

As new threats become known, the managed firewall service provider will take the appropriate course of action, which might entail adding a rule to the rule set or changing an existing port configuration on the firewall to thwart persistent access attempts.

 Building Internet Firewalls
Firewalls in computer networks keep damage on one part of the network (e.g., eavesdropping, a worm program, file damage) from spreading to the rest of the network.
A firewall may also be used to separate two or more parts of your local network (for example, protecting finance from RandD).
Part II describes possible firewall designs and general terms and concepts, how to protect the bastion host in your firewall configuration, how to build proxying and packet filtering firewalls, and how to configure Internet services to operate with a firewall.

In building architecture, a firewall is a fireproof wall used to prevent a fire from spreading from one part of the structure to another.
Different types of firewalls are appropriate to different circumstances: the type of firewall to be used should be matched to the problem, or to the security policies that the organization wishes to enforce.
Most firewall software offers proxy agents that allow traffic to be passed through the firewall in either direction, so long as the user who initiates the traffic is able to provide some level of authentication of his/her identity.
