Case Study: Automatic Redundant Firewall Failover
As a result, even though redundant firewalls and routers were installed as a matter of routine, any failure of a firewall would result in users being unable to reach across the firewalls unless addresses (or static routes on the routers) were modified.
Network Address Translation (NAT) was implemented on the border routers serving the firewalls (using Cisco IOS 11.2) to map the different addresses used by the redundant firewalls back to a common set of address pairings.
Networking Unlimited, Inc. designed a win-win solution for the client, providing most of the benefits of allowing dynamic routing through the firewalls without exposing either network to the dangers of allowing dynamic routing through the firewalls.

Firewall (networking) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In information technology, a firewall is a piece of hardware and/or software which functions in a networked environment to prevent some communications forbidden by the security policy, analogous to the function of firewalls in building construction.
Network firewalls, normally running on a dedicated network device or computer positioned on the boundary of two or more networks or DMZs (demilitarized zones).
Firewalls often have network address translation (NAT) functionality, and the hosts protected behind a firewall commonly have addresses in the "private address range", as defined in RFC 1918.

What is firewall? - a definition from Whatis.com
A firewall is often installed in a specially designated computer separate from the rest of the network so that no incoming request can get directly at private network resources.
For mobile users, firewalls allow remote access in to the private network by the use of secure logon procedures and authentication certificates.
In firefighting, a firewall is a barrier established to prevent the spread of fire.

Quick HOWTO : Ch14 : Linux Firewalls Using iptables - Linux Home Networking
Network security is a primary consideration in any decision to host a website as the threats are becoming more widespread and persistent every day.
This means that the firewall keeps track of each connection passing through it and in certain cases will view the contents of data flows in an attempt to anticipate the next action of certain protocols.
A firewall is a critical part of any establishment that connects to an unprotected network such as the Internet, but a firewall is never sufficient.

firewall - EnterpriseNetworkingPlanet - News, trends and advice for network managers
Firewalls can be implemented in both hardware and software, or a combination of both.
Firewalls are frequently used to prevent unauthorized Internet users from accessing private networks connected to the Internet, especially intranets.
All messages entering or leaving the intranet pass through the firewall, which examines each message and blocks those that do not meet the specified security criteria.

Firewall Blowout - Works For Me - Network Computing
Network access control is no longer a perimeter-only game, and the need for protection mechanisms is deeper than the address-and-service restrictions we're used to.
Most of us date the birth of the network firewall industry to Digital Equipment's design in the early '90s, which was soon followed by Trusted Information Systems' Gauntlet firewall and Check Point's FireWall-1.
Obviously, application proxy firewalls haven't died, but you needn't be an equity analyst to know which approach is on top of the market: Stateful packet filtering proponents Check Point, Cisco and Juniper have dominated for years.

 Networking: Choice of firewall
Many seem to think that a H/W level firewall like the CISCO PIX box to be much more secure and that the Linux solution is too risky due to the fact that so many programmers have access to the source code.
Linux-based firewalls are in use all over the world, but you need to be a Unix/Linux guru to really lock it down, and there is very little formal support unless you pay for a good commercial version.
I seem to be leaning towards a Linux box as the main gateway firewall and possibly a second (Linux) firewall behind that at a later date.

Networking: Firewall problem with same IP address
It would be a very-poor firewall if it "exposed" the MAC addresses -- all you should see is the MAC-address of the firewall.
I will assume then that you are talking about two different networks, each with its own firewall, but each using the same reserved IP addresses for the "safe" area internally.
Wouldn't you have to interface with the outward facing NIC on the firewall and have the firewall configured to forward the port request on to the appropriate client?

Windows Firewall protects your computer by blocking communications that might actually be dangerous software trying to find a way to connect to your computer, rather than communications from a person or program you want to interact with.
Windows Firewall is smart enough to allow connections from computers in your home and to block those connections from computers on the Internet.
For example, Windows Firewall will allow you to share files or a printer between two computers in your home, but it will block any attempts from people on the Internet to connect to your computer.

Network administrators can easily define and manage, in real time, the security level of each PC.

Linux Embedded Appliance Firewall Review | Tom's Networking   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
A network firewall is basically a system that controls communications to and from you based on those ports.
If you're not running a web server for instance, then nobody from outside should be initiating a connection to you on port 80, so the job of a basic firewall then would be to block such requests, while still allowing you to surf the web, read your email, and so forth.
It will need to provide a means of sharing a single connection to the Internet so that everyone on the local network can have access, and it will need to forward port 80 requests from the outside to your web server, all while keeping invalid requests out.

New Networking Features in Windows XP Service Pack 2 - The Cable Guy - January 2004
Windows Firewall is a stateful firewall that drops unsolicited incoming traffic that does not correspond to either traffic sent in response to a request of the computer (solicited traffic) or unsolicited traffic that has been specified as allowed (excepted traffic).
Once the network attack is over and appropriate updates are installed to prevent future attacks, then Windows Firewall can be placed in the normal operating mode (corresponding to the On (recommended) option), which allows excepted traffic.
IPv6 ICF in the Advanced Networking Pack for Windows XP is a stateful firewall for IPv6 traffic that drops all unsolicited incoming IPv6 traffic, providing a level of protection from malicious users and programs that rely on unsolicited incoming traffic to attack computers.
