Scientific Expedition | Research Projects | Snow and Firn Microstructure   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
The purpose of this project is to measure the properties of the snow and firn in the top 50 feet (15 m) and to determine whether changes in the near-surface snow and firn properties could cause changes in the processes in the snow and firn there that affect the chemical concentrations.
Snow and firn are highly layered because of differences in the way that the snow accumulates and because of aging.
Firn cores will also be drilled and shipped back to CRREL in New Hampshire, where we will conduct similar measurements on the deeper layers.

Firn - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Firn is partially-compacted névé, a type of snow that has been left over from past seasons and has been recrystallized into a substance denser than névé.
It is ice that is at an intermediate stage between snow and glacial ice.
Firn has the appearance of wet sugar, but has a hardness that makes it extremely resistant to shovelling.

Firn is partially-compacted snow that has been left over from past seasons and has been recrystalized into a more dense substance.
It generally has a density greater than 0.55 and is often found underneath the snow that accumulates at the head of a glacier.

Ice core - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Air in the atmosphere and firn are slowly exchanged by molecular diffusion through pore spaces, because gases move toward regions of lower concentration.
Gases involved in ozone depletion, CFCs, chlorocarbons, and bromocarbons, were measured in firn and levels were almost zero at around 1880 except for CH Br, which is known to have natural sources.

 Crater Firn Caves
Glacial ice forms from firn at a density of 0.82 g/cc, at which point the individual crystals become firmly interlocked with one another and the material possesses an inherent hardness (Sharp, 1960).
The firn ice field proper is below the headwall on the southeast wall of the crater, rising to a maximum elevation of 1990 m (6,520 feet) on the south side of the lava dome, and sloping downward to the northeast.
Further to the northeast, the firn ice field rises gently to a saddle (elevation 1890 m or 6,200 feet) adjacent to the crater wall.

 Development of the Crater
It is not readily apparent from a distance that glacier ice is present in the crater, because it is hidden by snow, firn, and rock debris.

From 1986 to the present, we observed the gradual change from snow to firn to glacier ice in cave passages (ice bulk densities were not measured systematically).

Karsten Adriaan Kaspers: Chemical and physical analyses of firn and firn air : from Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
Firn air is the air that is trapped in the porous medium of firn, which is typically the first one hundred meters of an ice core.
In the chapters three and four, the firn air analyses are focussed on the non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs): ethane, propane and acetylene, and methyl chloride.
Although one would expect that old firn air could be found at locations high on the Antarctic plateau, with low temperatures, low accumulation rates and low surface pressures, firn air analyses on various locations showed that finding the oldest firn air is not straightforward.

Firn air ages are determined from correlation of CO in the samples with the atmospheric CO history of Etheridge et al.
Flasks at 120 and 122 m were subjected to some contamination with modern air during sampling, probably owing to stress on the pump as the firn layers began to turn to ice.
Mole fractions of both gases near the bottom of the firn are less than 1% of the present day values, suggesting that natural sources are minimal or non-existent.
