The Cardigans - Biography - AOL Music
The band's 1995 breakout album, Life, reflected the Cardigans at their most saccharine -- the sunny disposition of vocalist Nina Persson being the major argument in favor -- and critics inserted the group into the space age pop revivalist camp.
Even the band's origins show that their later appearance was quite misleading; two heavy metal fanatics formed the group in October 1992 in Jonkoping, Sweden.
First Band on the Moon, released in September 1996, de-emphasized the pure pop in favor of abstract arrangements and some rather violent themes.

The follow up, First Band On The Moon, shows The Cardigans fine tuning their pop smarts, and provides a strong argument that they may be Sweden's hippest export since the Volvo P-1800.
On the previous albums, Peter composed the music and and Magnus the lyrics, however, First Band On The Moon shows the debut of Nina as a major contributor, writing half of the lyrics on the album.

Rolling Stone : First Band On The Moon : Review
In this world of cookie-cutter, post-alternative bands, the Cardigans are fueled by a deep and abiding faith in novelty.
Yet with First Band on the Moon, their second U.S. album, the Cardigans prove to be more than the sum of their gimmicks.
First Band on the Moon, with its insinuating melodies and carefully crafted, bittersweet fun, is truly sophisticated and irony-free, except for the Cardigans' take on that most iconographic of Sabbath anthems, "Iron Man." It's a thrill to hear Persson purr, "Heavy boots of lead/Fills his victims full of dread," over a Jim Hall-style jazz-guitar figure.

The dreamy songs on First Band on the Moon are a Euro-pop for the `90s, recalling Abba while still sounding unique and current.
First Band on the Moon will bring a smile to the face of all but the most jaded music fans--and some of them will even love it.
The band even takes its name from a Japanese cartoon series, which comes as no surprise because Japanese animation is the current hot cult item with the sci-fi and comic crowd.

The Cardigans : First Band on the Moon
For listeners who had caught up with the Cardigans on their breakout album, Life, the group's third album was a confusing pastiche which included several conventional pop songs, but also added tracks with left-field arrangements and some (comparatively) disturbing lyrics.
Still, First Band on the Moon is saved by the Cardigans' core strengths: Persson's vocals and Svensson's arrangements.

INKPOT MUSIC REVIEWS: THE CARDIGANS First Band On The Moon (1996)
For FIRST BAND ON THE MOON, their third album, the Sabbath anthem of choice is "Iron Man," and hearing Nina Persson sing "ooooh, Iron Man" and then tag a string of boop-boop-be-boop beep-beep-de-beep's to tne end of the song is bound to strike a perverse chord in anybody's soul.
Even though some of the songs on FIRST BAND ON THE MOON swing in the same carefree, sunshine-in-the-countryside way of those found on LIFE, the general swing is towards an uncharacteristic, even disturbing melancholia.
It was the first gig he had been to in years and he said he was fascinated by the eerie sound the band had created on their three Sabbath/Ozzy covers.

His backing band (most of whom performed with him earlier in his career) made the adjustment smoothly as well.
Unlike most progressive bands that felt the need to dramatically alter their sound by the end of the '70s, Snopek didn't appear as contrived and awkward as other more notable prog-rockers cum pop stars.
Sigmund Snopek's underlying progressive keyboards are still the foundation of these tracks, but the solid and authoritative guitar playing of Byron Wiemann, and the steady rhythm of bassist Jim Gorton and drummer Mike Lucas give this album character and distinction amongst the countless displaced '70s prog artists.

The Cardigans is an equally comfy and buttoned-down Swedish band that enjoys pleasing people of all ages with its lounge-flavored pop-rock.
The mixture of styles melds best on the album's first single, "My Favourite Game," which wraps Nina Persson's sweet vocals around a pulsing, guttural groove that is matched measure for measure by a distorted underbelly of muted "Ooh ooh"'s.
And since the group's sound isn't working overtime, the band resorts to lyrics of the utmost mediocrity, over-reaching well into the depths of the average, annoying euro-pop world they have so ingeniously avoided until now.

Nina's voice is still syrupy-sweet..and the music is very imaginative and catchy...but you could hear the beginnings of the changes of the Cardigans music, the "growing-up" phase that most bands go through, which leads to darker lyrics and music...and if you are a fan of their first album, it can be a little dissapointing.
Though "First Band on the Moon" is more straight pop-rock music than their previous "Life", it is still quite different from the music Cardigans are making today.

If the "First Band On the Moon" album, initially released in 1980, had been released relatively recently, I would say that Dr. Alles (track 2) is one of the most impudent borrowings I've ever heard.
Furthermore, the instrumental arrangements, consisting usually of varied interplay between solos of electric and bass guitars and synthesizers and passages of piano, flow mostly non-stop on them (as well as on all of the other songs on the album, though) regardless whether there are vocals or not.
I won't say that I like "First Band On the Moon" as much as Snopek's Rock Opera "Trinity", which, certainly, should be regarded as his life work.

LoveFool annoys me on many levels, not the least of which is the "I don't care how you treat me, just don't leave" message that the lyrics present - does anyone really want their daughter or sister listening to something like that?
Been It just flat shocked me - it's a much better song musically, and the lyrics are much more cohesive in that they actually mean something - though I think it's the first time I'd ever heard the word "whore" on top 40 radio before the Cardigans came along.
