  First Baptist Church - Columbus, IN
First Baptist's Music Ministry has drawn many families to the church over the years and brightened many lives in the community.
While most of the churches visited on tour are Baptist, the choir has also performed at Methodist churches, a Christian church, and a Church of the Brethren.
First Baptist salutes these young ambassadors for Christ and is pleased to introduce this ministry "team" in this first In-Focus feature.

 First Baptist Church
When first organized in January of 1852, the church was known as the First Regular Baptist Church of Columbus, Indiana.
The church first met in the Presbyterian Meeting House and later in the old courthouse until separation of church and state concerns prompted the County Commissioners to rule that no religious bodies could use the courthouse as a place of meeting.
The first two were manually pumped and church records indicate that at one point a young man from the congregation was paid $1.25 a month to fill the bellows during the service.

Walter Stuart Beebe, founder of The Church Bus News, was born on February 27, 1934, in Columbus, Ohio.
Some of these are Trinity Baptist Church, Jacksonville, Florida, under the leadership of Dr. Bob Gray; Thomas Road Baptist Church, Lynchburg, Virginia, under the leadership of Dr. Jerry Falwell; and First Baptist Church, Hammond, Indiana, under the leadership of the late Dr. Jack Hyles.
In 1993, the church built a gymnasium that was also used for several years as the church auditorium.

Otis was one of the founders (1859) of Calvary Presbyterian Church; member of the Board of Trustees of the united First and Calvary Churches, chairman of the building committee of the present edifice (1870-1873), and member of the Session until 1884.
She was received into the membership of the First church, April 5, 1845, and at the time of her death was the oldest member.

First used in 1867 by Miller in the First Methodist Church in Akron, Ohio, the Akron plan provided design flexibility, comfort, and good sight lines.
Frequently used in Protestant churches and named after Henry Hobson Richardson, the designer of Trinity Church in Boston and one of the most original and popular American architects of the late nineteenth century, this style was noted for its rounded arches and massive stone masonry.
In the Second Church of Christ Scientist (now the Church of God and True Holiness), designed by Frederick Strieburger in 1916, the dominant central dome is resting on a square rather than a circular form, while the central space is extended by barrel vaults in each direction.

This is painful, especially if they grew up in a church only to discover that in the end they were not welcome there any longer because of their sexual orientation.
The church that I attended as a child and the one that Mom still belonged to upon her passing, graciously hosted a meal for the family, following Mom's funeral.

The embossed, painted rectangles in opposing corners were a unique feature used to identify plates from Indiana, even at distances too great to read the state name or abbreviation.
Maryland issues a multitude of organizational plates (only 25 orders are needed to create plates for a new organzation), and some church denominations and even individual church congregations have obtained organizational plates that are available to their members.

The Indiana Civil Liberties Union filed the lawsuit in June on behalf of four people, including a Quaker lobbyist, who said they found the tradition of offering the usually Christian prayers offensive.
During one prayer in April, elder Clarence Brown of Second Baptist Church in Bedford sang a gospel song called "Just A Little Talk With Jesus," prompting some lawmakers to leave the chamber and several people to lodge complaints with the ICLU.
She said prayers offered in the halls of government must be sensitive to the diverse religious lives of all Indiana citizens.

The Fellowship of American Baptist Musicians, a recognizes agency of the American Baptist Churches, USA, through affiliation with the Board of Educational Ministries, is due mainly to the vision and insight of the late Reverend Jet E. Turner.
FABM was formally organized at the first Conference for Church Musicians at Green Lake, Wisconsin, in July, 1965.
Professor Robert H. Mitchell of the Church Music Department of the American Baptist Seminary of the West served as the second president in 1967-68 and was followed by Dr. Turner, who was elected to a second term in 1969.
