The Confederates were taking the battle north to the enemy, scant weeks before the Army of the Potomac and the Army of Northern Virginia collided at the crossroads of Routes 15, 97, and 30 in a sleepy southern PA town called Gettysburg.
On this curve the day of the battle there was a stone wall with a steep drop off on the south side of the road and a split rail fence on the other side.
In the Second Battle of Winchester in June 1863, Confederate troops successfully attacked and defeated Union troops occupying forts on the western side of Winchester.

When he recaptured Winchester on May 25, 1862, in the First Battle of Winchester, the retreating Federals did not defend Fort Collier, nor did the Union garrison defend the Fort in the Second Battle of Winchester, on June 14-15, 1863.
But in the Third Battle of Winchester on September 19, 1864, the war came in all its fury to Fort Collier and the Stine house did not survive it.

The first Europeans to come through the Shenandoah Valley were Jesuit missionaries in 1632, and details of this wilderness area were first shown on a map by a Frenchman, Samuel de Champlain.

The 27th’s first major action of the war was at First Manassas where it earned the nickname "the Bloody 27th" because of its initial losses.
The regiment was virtually wiped out in 1864 at the battle of Spotsylvania when damp weather soaked their powder and the Union Second Corps under Winfield Scott Hancock was able to roll up the Brigade’s flank and kill, wound or capture most of the men in the brigade.

As there is a good road from Front Royal to Winchester, the Rebels with sufficient force at Front Royal could easily intercept our line of march and cut us off from our supplies, especially as the occupation of Front Royal destroyed the railroad line that connected us with Washington.
This is often done when not an enemy is within miles, and it is a singular fact that our losses on this march were at a long distance from the actual points of attack.
As we approached Winchester we were agreeably surprised to find that the enemy was not before us, and that the flag of our Union was still flying from the public buildings.
