It was to the men of Zurich and their leader Hans Waldmann that the victory of Morat (1476) was due in the Burgundian war; and Zurich took a leading part in the Italian campaign of 1512-15, the burgomaster Schmid naming the new duke of Milan (1512).
In the first battle (4th June) the French under Massena, on the defensive, were attacked by the Austrians under the Archduke Charles, Massena retiring behind the Limmat before the engagement had reached a decisive stage.
The first symptoms of active discontent appeared later among the dwellers by the lake, who founded in 1794 a club at Stafa and claimed the restoration of the liberties of 1489 and 1531, a movement which was put down by force of arms in 1795.

A FEW miles distant from the little town of St. Mene hould, in the northeast of France, are the village and hill of Valmy, and near the crest of that hill a simple monument points out the burial-place of the heart of a general of the French republic and a marshal of the French empire.

To that battle the democratic spirit which in 1848, as well as in 1792, proclaimed the Republic in Paris, owed its preservation, and it is thence that the imperishable activity of its principles may be dated.

In the short and disastrous war of 1805 Archduke Charles commanded what was intended to be the main army in Italy, but events made Germany the decisive theatre of operations, and the defeats sustained on the Danube neutralized the success obtained by the archduke over Massena in the desperately fought Battle_of_Caldiero.

It is usually divided between the First Coalition (1792-1797) and the Second Coalition (1798-1801), although France was at war with Britain continuously from 1793 to 1802.
In concert with the cabinet of Vienna, Russia and Prussia had executed the first partition of Poland in 1772; and after the death of Frederick the Great, the empress Catharine and the emperor Joseph united in 1785 to effect that of European Turkey.
This began the longest period of peace during the period 1792-1814, and the crowning of Napoleon as emperor is an appropriate point to mark the transition between the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars.

New York's first subway, the Interborough Rapid Transit (IRT), began running from City Hall to 145th Street; the fare was a nickel.  The Firm would eventually represent the IRT's receiver when the system went bankrupt.
The Firm moved to a beautiful, brand-new building, One Citicorp Center at 53rd Street.   It marked the first time in its nearly 100-year history that the Firm's main office was not in lower Manhattan.
For the first time in its history the Firm opened an office in Washington, D.C.  The office initially consisted of three partners and five associates.  Philip L. Verveer became a partner in the D.C. office in 1983 and over many years would build the Firm's substantial telecommunications practice.

He copied from paintings by Philips Wouwerman, Abraham Bloemaert, Georg Philipp Rugendas I and Salomon van Ruysdael, adopting the dark-toned realism of the latter as an effective contrast to the picturesque chiaroscuro of the groups of horsemen in such paintings as Mounted Battle (1786; Zurich, Ksthaus).
