1 Maccabees - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The setting of the book is about a century after the conquest of Judea by the Greeks under Alexander the Great, after Alexander's empire has been divided so that Judea was part of the Greek Seleucid Empire.
The book covers the whole of the revolt, from 175 to 134 BC and highlights how the salvation of the Jewish people in this crisis came from God through Mattathias's family, particularly his sons Judas, Jonathan and Simon, and his grandson John Hyrcanus.
The book's author is unknown, but is assumed to have been a devout Jew from the Holy Land who may or may not have directly taken part in the events described in the book.

 Book of Maccabees
The last book, 4 Maccabees, originally written in Greek probably about AD 25, is primarily a philosophical discussion of the primacy of reason, governed by religious laws, over passion.
His son Judas, "the Maccabee," succeeded him (B.C. 166) as the leader in directing the war of independence, which was carried on with great heroism on the part of the Jews, and was terminated in the defeat of the Syrians.
The first contains a history of the war of independence, commencing (B.C. 175) in a series of patriotic struggles against the tyranny of Antiochus Epiphanes, and terminating B.C. It became part of the Vulgate Version of the Bible, and was thus retained among the Apocrypha.

Despite the theory that the Book of First Maccabees existed originally in Hebrew language, it is not a part of the Jewish canon, although it describes the events associated with Hanukkah.
Historically, the book has been deutero-canonical for Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox and Russian Orthodox Christians, and it is apocryphal for Protestants, although Martin Luther included Maccabees in the appendix of his German Bible.
The narrative is reminiscent of books in the Hebrew canon, especially Judges, Kings and Samuel.

Introduction to the Books of the Apocrypha: 1 Maccabees
B contains none of the books of the Maccabees since it follows the Canon of Athanasius in which they are not included.
Origen's title would suggest that the book was written in Hebrew, and this is definitely stated by Jerome to have been the case, for in the Prologus Galeatus he says: Machabeorum primum librum Hebraicum reperi.
And while it is, of course, possible that they were the work of the compiler himself, their very different character and style from the rest of the book point rather to their being quotations from some popular collections of lyrics or religious poems.

 USCCB - NAB - 1maccabees - Introduction
he name Maccabee, probably meaning "hammer," is actually applied in the Books of Maccabees to only one man, Judas, third son of the priest Mattathias and first leader of the revolt against the Seleucid kings who persecuted the Jews (1 Macc 2:4, 66; 2 Macc 8:5, 16; 10:1, 16).
The two Books of Maccabees, placed last in the Douai version of the Old Testament, contain independent accounts of events in part identical which accompanied the attempted suppression of Judaism in Palestine in the second century B.C. The vigorous reaction to this attempt established for a time the religious and political independence of the Jews.
The Books of Maccabees, though regarded by Jews and Protestants as apocryphal, i.e., not inspired Scripture, because not contained in the Palestinian Canon or list of books drawn up at the end of the first century A.D., have nevertheless always been accepted by the Catholic Church as inspired, on the basis of apostolic tradition.

The reason why I rather suppose that his copy of the Maccabees wanted these chapters, than that his own copies are here imperfect, is this, that all their contents are not here omitted, though much the greatest part be.
