Comics are primarily an American tradition, but the earliest comics have been found from the Egyptian times, around 3000 B.C. It is said that the newspaper comic artists of today are "spiritual descendants" of those Egyptian artists.
In early 20th century comics, they were not yet comics at all--they were merely cartoons used to advertise magazines and promote reading.
The first comic to appear with continuing characters in a daily paper was Little Bears by Richard Felton Outcault in The Examiner.

Now-defunct American publisher First Comics released but a small chunk of the entire saga during the late 1980s, and Dark Horse is both filling in the blanks, so to speak, of stories First skipped during its publication, and picking up where First left off after publishing about a third of the original material.
One might assume that a comic book featuring a grimacing samurai carrying a bloody sword on its cover would contain a certain amount of violence, but the amount of violence in Lone Wolf and Cub is not necessarily as remarkable as who it is sometimes committed against and how it is portrayed.
Already a classic when released here by First in 1987, Dark Horse's millennial publication of Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima's title is no less than a reincarnation, a new life in a new body, for one of the immortal spirits of manga.

One of my favorite comic books of all time was Not Brand Echh, a sensational superhero lampoon that Marvel published too few issues of (only 13, from August 1967 to May 1969).
Some guys would come in and they’d be really excited about doing this book or that book—they’d sit there with the editors and they’d have a ball talking about the plot, or how many costumed superheroes they could get on a page.
