First Daughter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
First Daughter is a 2004 romantic comedy film that revolves around a Presidential daughter who enrolls at a college.
She is "America's princess", the President's daughter, which means she has recently spent a sheltered existence in the White House with her father (Michael Keaton), who is usually too busy taking care of the country to look after his daughter.
Director Forest Whitaker likened First Daughter to a fairy tale, characterising it as "the story of a princess who leaves the 'castle' [the White House] to go out in the world to discover who and what she is".

First Daughter Review by Dustin Rowles
She is the daughter of the President of the United States, a premise that one would imagine is teeming with possibilities, none of which anyone bothers to explore.
Instead, O’Connell and his writing team attempt to turn the First Daughter into something along the lines of the Princess Diaries or What a Girl Wants, both terrible movies, but at least they had their heart in the right place and a lead character in the same demographic as the target audience.
First Daughter, on the other hand, has absolutely no heart, and its star is a 26 year old who lost all virginal credibility when she slept with Pacey the first time she portrayed a college student in Dawson’s Creek four years ago.

DVD Verdict Review - First Daughter
Not likely, though, as she happens to be the daughter of President Mackenzie (Michael Keaton, Batman), living at the White House and constantly in the public eye.
Such questions are only occasionally addressed in First Daughter, which pretty much eschews any thoughtful examination of what it means to be a regular kid in the most irregular of circumstances, in favor of providing a silly fairy-tale romance that has little to do with the real world.
The First Daughter DVD arrives courtesy of Fox, a studio that's still holding on to the somewhat outdated idea of releasing a two-sided disc, with the widescreen version appearing on one side and the full screen appearing on the other (most studios now just release two separate versions of the film).

As improbable as it seems, this is the second movie this year about a President's daughter who tries to express her freedom and falls in love with somebody who is more than he seems.
When compared to Chasing Liberty (which is essentially the same movie), First Daughter is marginally better due to two things; Katie Holmes and the fact that it is relatively (key word) more realistic.

Boston.com / A&E / Movies / 'First Daughter' is a smug and saccharine fairy tale
Both Moore's film and "First Daughter" promote a blank notion of what it must be like growing up in the White House: so stressful you just want to run away and into the arms of the first cute boy who comes along.
But "First Daughter" is so smug and moralizing about how to grow up that it feels more lobbied for by a youth-focused political action committee than dreamed up.
"First Daughter," though, is just bland behavioral propaganda, and Holmes makes such a guileless and robotic spokeswoman, it wouldn't be nuts to think the White House was just another mansion in Stepford.

 First Daughter Movie Review
In First Daughter we're introduced to Samantha MacKenzie (Katie Holmes), a young girl who is setting off for college in hopes of a normal life - but unfortunately for Sam her father is the President of the United States of America (Micheal Keaton).
In fact, based on the opening - for a brief moment - I thought First Daughter was going to shed the typecast lineaments of the coming-of-age story, but it soon fell into that same pattern we've all witnessed a hundred times before in a hundred different films of the same caliber.
First Daughter has its moments of inspiration, however its lack thereof causes the film to be heaped in with all the other She's All That's and Chasing Liberty's out there.

Forest Whitaker's FIRST DAUGHTER, a poor little rich girl story about the President's college-age daughter, is an exceedingly lame teen comedy bereft of genuine moments.
From the first moment, the film acts like it is a whimsical fairy tale that was supposed to star Hilary Duff.
The only good thing about FIRST DAUGHTER is that it makes you want to reevaluate the bland CHASING LIBERTY, the Mandy Moore movie about the president's daughter, which was originally scheduled to open opposite FIRST DAUGHTER until FIRST DAUGHTER blinked and moved its release forward by almost nine months.

First Daughter has been directed by Forest Whitaker, who imbues the film with the same sort of genial quality and deliberate pace that seems to have become his trademark (following earlier efforts like Hope Floats and Waiting to Exhale).
This kind of lazy screenwriting runs rampant through First Daughter, particularly in the film's third act - which just goes on and on, extending the running time to a bloated 104-minutes (it's clear that the movie should have topped out at around an hour and a half).

First Daughter is the second film this year to play fast and loose with Clinton's life, after Mandy Moore traipsed around Europe as the most privileged teen runaway in history in Chasing Liberty.
It also starts by introducing the first daughter as a geeky, brace-faced teenager, and to its credit, keeps her in conservative clothes and manner for most of the film.
But let's hope the similarities between fictional and factual first daughters end there, otherwise Clinton will die of boredom before she turns 30.
