Rita Katz & Josh Devon on al Qaeda on National Review Online
As fitna is heavily discouraged in Islam, an Islamic terrorist group carrying out attacks against fellow Muslims is likely to cause some confusion for al Qaeda's potential and current followers.
Since al Qaeda's existence depends on public support, the terrorist group must rationalize why it is waging this fitna and why Muslims are being targeted.
Previously, al Qaeda's rhetoric in justifying attacks in which Muslims were killed was to maintain that they were casualties in the pursuit of a greater cause, and that any Muslim killed in such an attack would become a martyr and therefore go to heaven.

The Peace Encyclopedia: Apostacy, "Leaving Islam"
the public declaration of rejecting the fundamentals of Islam, has also negative influence on the Muslim society, it is indeed a major fitna.
Just as upholding and protecting the constitution of a country is a sign of patriotism, and undermining it is a form of treason - in the same way open rejection of the fundamental beliefs of Islam by a Muslim is an act of treason.
And that is why Islam has prescribed harsh punishment for irtidad.

 HizmetBooks
'Fitna', as used here, means 'confusion, fight among people'.
Nobody's command which is a sin should be obeyed; yet it will be obeyed if disobedience causes fitna, for, as written is Ashbah, it is permissible to commit minor harm in order to escape grave harm.
Though spread of committing haram is also fitna, there is no need to ask about this, since harams are evident.

Al Jadid Magazine - Arab Book World
The streets, according to fundamentalists, are places of sin and temptation, because they are public and used by both sexes, thus meeting the definition of fitna, which translates into conflict or trouble.

Fitna can mean oppression, persecution, seduction - all implying the "discord" that attachment with ghayrallah (other-than-Allah) brings about.
Fitna has been explained in verse 191 of this surah.
Fitna means subversive activities to destroy peace and rule of law.

 Initials
Many other believers of 19 miracle allways somehow mistranslate 74/31 inserting misleading numbers and missing to translate the crutial word "illa"-only/but(only a fitna, but a fitna) and halucinating waws(conjunction and) to give impression that 19 as fitna for disbelievers is just one of 5 functions of no 19.
Maybe this strange spelling is "but a trial(74/31)" to convince people about existing 19 pattern in quran without previously checking the things or seeking the answer/opinion from quran about real function of 19-"their number is but a fitna for kafirs(74/31)".
The fact that God propheciesed(in 74/31) that 19 will be BUT A FITNA- means of misguidance/trail for disbelievers, could be the proof or phenomena that will increase the faith of people and that will helps them to attain the certainity as described in 74/31.

 Flit(tm): Provoking Fitna
Fitna is a complex term that includes the idea of provoking muslim to fight muslim, improper combat, and temptations that draw people away from God.
Over at joyfulchristian, we have a note not only remarking that we are making progress but that our news media is so bad at its job that they haven't noticed.
By provoking Al Queda into displaying their contempt for traditional muslim values, we're creating a situation which dries up their ability to recruit.

Some Ahadith About the Jazira and Fitan Before the Day of Judgment (Islaam.Com)
And the duhaima' fitna is the greatest fitna that will occur prior to the appearance of the Antichrist.
This shows that the duhaima' fitna will clean the believers from the people of fitan, doubt and hypocrisy; not that it will annihilate them completely.
What bears witness to what al-Qari has said is what has been mentioned regarding the fitna known as ad-duhaima' [my note: ad-duhaima' means black and dark, at-Tuwaijiri gives a lengthy discussion on the meaning of this word on pages 55-56.].

Jesus Will Return - by Harun Yahya
Islamic literature defines fitna as "hard times," such as civil strife, war, or riots, during which evil forces attempt to weaken and even eradicate people's faith.
Such fitna will lead to a stronger faith, an increase in patience and rewards in the Hereafter for the believers' having a solid faith, while weakening further the faith of those with weak faith.
Other hadiths and Islamic scholars state that the Mahdi will appear when a particular type of fitna has become worldwide.

 Islamic Voice - DHU'L QADAH / DHU'L HAJJ
Another flaw in the argument of his opponents, Nadwi writes, is that while those 'ulama who insist on strict taqlid of past jurisprudential precedent claim that in today's age of fitna, women should not pray in the mosque, they allow women to travel to Makkah for the Haj pilgrimage.
Nadwi goes so far as to assert that those who claim that women are 'the aunts of Satan' (shaytan ki khala) and that if they are allowed to pray in mosques all sorts of fitna would result, actually 'deny the piety and faith of their own mothers and sisters'.
Nadwi takes on the arguments of his opponents who, while recognising that at the Prophet's time women did pray in the mosque, claim that in today's age of great licentiousness women should be forbidden from doing so for fear of fitna.

 The Masacre
If there was conjunction waw/and after words "but a fitna for disbelievers", only then it be possible to count "attaining certainity and inceasing faith etc" mentioned in the verse as equal functions of their number, together with its function of being "but a fitna for those who disbelieve".
RK massacred the verse 74/31; 1.he omited the word ILLA/only/but/except,which stands in front of FITNA 2.he inserted numbering 3.and he translated fitna, that is actually a noun, as a verb(to disturb) cause all other of his alleged five functions are given in the form of the verb.
It is obvious that listing does not starts by fitna, but by "that those who are given the book attain certainity"…etc

Al-Ahram Weekly Region Facing up to fitna
"There is a persistent effort to fuel tension and cause fitna [strife] between Iraq's Sunnis and Shi'ites," Sheikh Mahmoud Al-Ethawy, the imam of Abdel-Qader Al-Kilani Mosque in central Baghdad warned his Friday congregates.
In a surprising show of unity, imams throughout Iraq have been preaching a common message: that Iraqis should remain united and vigilant against attempts to invoke sectarian conflict.
Al- Ethawy, and many other imams, accused the US-led occupation authorities of fanning the flames of conflict.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Fitna can come in any shape or form till Shaitaan is backing it up.
And guard yourselves against a chastisement (FITNA), which cannot fall exclusively on those of you who are wrong doers, and know that Allah is severe in punishment.
If it comes on cyber space (internet), it may be called eFitna.

In Palestine, jihad has also so far led to fitna: the Palestinian Authority has lost influence, while Ariel Sharon's government has built a fence that keeps away most suicide bombers and will choke the Palestinian economy.
Instead of making inroads into enemy territory, jihad has backfired and led to what they call fitna - a war in the heart of Islam that has pitted Shia against Sunni, Arab against Kurd, Muslim against Muslim, and brought nothing but chaos.
The French journalists' abduction by the "Islamic Army in Iraq", which tried to blackmail Jacques Chirac into cancelling the law banning religious symbols in French schools, and its near-unanimous condemnation by the Muslim world, provide another opportunity for an alternative approach to fighting terrorism.

The Command of War in Islam
From this we learn that the war against fitna was a war of limited duration, not meant to be engaged in beyond the point of its specific purpose being served.
Invoking the Quranic exhortation to do battle against fitna in order to validate acts of war which had quite other aims is highly improper.
Religion became only for god, and now you want to fight so that fitna may return, and religion will no longer be for God."

FrontPage magazine.com :: The Sexual Rage Behind Islamic Terror by Jamie Glazov
Thus, as the Moroccan feminist Fitna Sabbah reveals in her book Woman in the Muslim Unconscious, there is a disturbing conflict in the Middle East between sexual libido and repression.
WomenÂ’s sexuality and social independence represent major threats to male supremacy and are tightly controlled.
A deep-seated fear of, and hostility to, individuality prevails, and its main expression exists in misogyny.

 The Virtues of Taraweeh Salaah

 Let The Scholars Beware!
The scholars of the salaf (past) were very cautious from going to the rulers for fear of fitna, and they have spoken much about this issue:
Hudhaifah (RA) said: "Bewar fitna." They have asked him: What are the places of fitna O Abu Abdullaah ?' He said: "The doors of the princes- one of you enters upon the prince, and he attests to him with lies, and says about him, what is not true." Sifat-us-Safwah (1/614)
Amongst those who forbade this were 'Umar bin 'Abdul-Azeez, Ibn Mubarak, Ath-Thawree, and others from amongst the imams.

The Men of Madina: Volume 1
This book is of particular interest because its pages demonstrate the attitude and action of the Companions and the Tabi’un when confronted by the most dangerous of trials — fitna, or civil war.
This is extremely important in the modern age, in which fitna is commonplace, for we can learn a great deal from how the early Muslims dealt with it.
This book is the translation of Volume 7 of the Kitab at-Tabaqat al-Kabir of Ibn SaÂ’d which deals with the Companions, TabiÂ’un and the subsequent generations of the people of knowledge in Basra, Baghdad, Khurasan, Syria and Egypt.

 Islam and Feminism
Being the first woman to transgress the territorial sexual limits she has been linked with Muslim concepts of fitna, which describes chaos, disorder and destruction.
Fitna serves to describe why there will be many more women than men in hell and is the description of any women elected to political office.
The opposition felt by the first politically active Muslim woman, A'isha, the ProphetÂ’s wife was not in terms of her competence, but based on systematic arguments centring on territory.

Jihad in Holy Quran and Hadith
As there was no fitna or danger from non-Muslims at that time, though they still existed, Ibn Umar argued that jihad by the sword was not incumbent upon them.
A man questioned him as to why he was not taking part, and referred to the verse "fight them till there is an end to mischief ( fitna)".
He replied that fighting had been necessary when Muslims were few, and Islam itself was in danger.

Divide and conquer: Al Qaeda's latest tactic in Iraq? csmonitor.com
A member of the Iraqi Islamic Party, a Sunni political body, and of the Sunni Board of Muslim Clerics, Sheikh Filahy accuses the US military of failing to prevent an influx of foreign fighters across Iraq's borders who seek to create a fitna, or dispute, between Sunnis and Shiites.
"This fitna came after the Americans occupied our country and opened the borders to outsiders."
Despite his disagreement with the Shiite view on the timetable, Sheikh Filahy says relations with Shiites remain strong.

Causing human beings to suffer distress and troubles or acting such a way to cause a military junta takeover of the civilian government comes to mean causing instigation (Fitna).
In one hadith, Rasulullah, peace be upon him, said, "Fitna is sleeping.
May Allahu ta'ala's curse be upon those who awaken it." Promoting rebellion against the laws of the land and against the government is considered as raising instigation.

Make Way for the Women - Why Your Mosque Should be Woman Friendly
Instead, the sister and I were greeted at the door by a very angry teenager, who railed at us to return to our homes, that women have no place in the masjid, and that we were a fitna [a trial, calamity or affliction] upon the brothers who were there (all three of them).
Subhan'Allah, if a small child and two sisters in hijab are a fitna upon these men, then whatever do they do as they walk around New York City and encounter women who cover nothing more than what they are legally required to cover (meaning the genitalia)?
A few years ago, I visited a masjid in New York, intending to make 'asr prayer while I was out shopping for things for my new home with my daughter and a friend.
