  Shakespeare First Folio
According to a census of surviving First Folios, Glasgow's copy is Class II B, being 'in fair condition, but with leaves missing, or supplied from later Folios, or in facsimile'.
In this letter, Halliwell-Phillipps states that he had three copies of the First Folio, of which this is his 'second best'; although the price of the book is not stated, it is described as being in remarkably fine condition generally for a 'low priced book'.
However, while the Shakespeare First Folio might not be an outstanding example of seventeenth century printing, its cultural and literary significance is undisputed, and it remains one of the most important and sought after books produced in England since printing began.

Many First Folios contain notes, or marginalia, from the period they were in the hands of editors and scholars-up until around the mid 19th century, before the cost of owning one became prohibitive for individuals of their means.
The library's copy of the first issue Third Folio (the 1664 second issue is the rarer one), published in 1663, is singular in its own right for the sketch of Anne Hathaway, Shakespeare's wife, and a sonnet written to her in pencil, it contains.
Folios were originally bound in deerskin and the bindings of the surviving ones have since been redone.

The folio contains 36 plays, 18 of which - including Macbeth, Twelfth Night, The Tempest, The Taming of the Shrew and As You Like It - had never been printed before and, were it not for their appearance in the folio, would most probably have been lost forever.
The folio, which retains its mid-17th century binding of plain brown calf skin and whose extensive markings and annotations provide an insight into its early readership, is due to go under the hammer at Sotheby's London sale room on July 13.

 The First Folio (1623)
The printing of the First Folio in 1623 was a massive undertaking; it included thirty six plays, eighteen of which had never been published before*.
Had the First Folio not been published, we would have lacked three of Shakespeare's last plays (Cymbeline, The Winter's Tale, and The Tempest), four tragedies (Julius Caesar, Macbeth, Antony and Cleopatra, and Coriolanus), and two of the mature comedies (As You Like It and Twelfth Night).

Gwynneth Bowen - Book Review: The Shakespeare First Folio
As Dr. Greg says in his preface: "This account of the Shakespeare First Folio was originally planned as an introduction to a facsimile of the volume.
This is necessarily something more than a study of the First Folio itself, for about half of the Folio texts were set up from corrected quartos—a fact which is vouched for by the numerous misprints which escaped detection and crept into the Folio from the Quartos.
Here, then, we have two of the sponsors of the First Folio acting together in 1619 to prevent the publication in Shakespeare's name of a collection of plays, two of which were not his at all, while the texts of most of the others were spurious.
