  First day of issue - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There will usually be a first day of issue postmark, frequently a pictorial cancellation, indicating the city and date where the item was first issued, and "first day of issue" is often used to refer to this postmark.
Unofficial first day of issue postmarks can also occur when a stamp collector purchases the stamps in question from a post office in the first day of issue city and then takes them (on that same day) to a post office in another city to have them cancelled.
A first day cover is an envelope where the postage stamps have been cancelled on their first day of issue.

First Issue was founded in the year 1985 in Leeuwarden by singer, songwriter and guitarist Will Ray Van Lemmer (vocals & guitar), Johanna (bass & vocals), Jouke (drums) and Magic Hankie (guitar).
As an experienced musician, he was willing to support First Issue in their first gigs ever, but soon to be substituted by Static Fred.
Memorable was his appearance on the First Issue theme-party of 1997, where he astonished the crowd with his sound.

Badge #39 was first issued to William (Scotty) Begg who was appointed on July 1, 1925.
According to the Nassau County Police Department Museum, they believed all of these first issue badges were destroyed in 1938 when the department went to the "Lion" badge.
This may be the only surviving first issue patrolman badge(pictured below)from the Nassau County Police Department in existence.

 Croatian First Issue
Perhaps this is because the first 3 stamps are airmail stamps -- perhaps Scott catalog has decided not to include the first three stamps because they were no for general use -- or perhaps there is another reason.
Scott #1 for Croatia is issue from 21st November 1991, while Croatian post consider as first issue one from 9th September 1991 (air mail).
I don't think they are not reliable in general, but maybe not according to our definition of first issue.

The first federal adhesive revenue stamps of the U.S. were issued in 1862 by Butler and Carpenter (BC) of Philadelphia.
Butler and Carpenter won the first contract (intially for one year), which required stamps delivered by October 1, 1862 (the first day of the federal fiscal year, when the new tax began).
All First Issues had 1 of 3 George Washington portraits and differed by denomination, size, color, and purpose.

This first issue had no real theme and it was only four pages long.
It would expand to eight pages by the next issue and published continuously for fourteen years.
