This lightning flash was not only very distant (over ten miles away), but it emerged from the side of the storm's updraft tower, making a very long length of the channel visible to the camera.
Both of these lightning strikes were several miles away, but their location on screen coupled with the 'ghosting' artifact make it look like part of the lightning came off of the side of my head and from the middle of my back.
As a result, we can see that the lightning came down just behind the row of trees in the foreground, but was still in front of the second row of trees in the background (not in front of the first treeline as the ghosting would suggest).
