It was on 16th October 1836 that the party received news of a Matabele army approaching.
There was further bad news - a hunting party had been attacked by the Matabele and had fared badly.
The Poteiter and Cilliers parties together defeated much larger Matabele Zulu forces at Vegkop in the Transvaal (October 19).

THE TATI CONCESSION LANDS: THE DESTRUCTION OF LOBENGULA AND THE MATABELE 1880 - 1893, By Dr. Donal Brody - June 1999
In July 1893, the Matabele War broke out when a party of Lobengula’s warriors raided a Mashona village near Fort Victoria, threatening a camp of British settlers.
The British High Commissioner authorized the now present military force to respond and indeed to continue the advance until all of Matabeleland was occupied and under strict British Control.
The documents present strong evidence that in order to weaken any possible resolve on Lobengula’s part, scouts in the Rudd party secretly agitated the neighboring Shona, who believed that the emerging problems were precipitated by the Matabele.

 South African War: Herbert Plumer.
He served with B-P in the Matabele Campaign and had an important part in the relief of Mafeking in the South African War.
Since the beginning of the war we have heard much of both of these fine officers, and not far short of "B-P's" spirited defence of "Gallant Little Mafeking" must be reckoned Plumer's repeated and strenuous efforts, in the teeth of obstacles which have been imperfectly realised at home, to bring relief to the sorely-pressed garrison.
Level-headed, full of pluck and "go," self-reliant, resourceful, and everlastingly alert, he is, moreover, an ideal leader of Mounted Infantry, that comparatively new power in war of which we are only now beginning to learn the true significance.

The Afghans however rebelled: thereafter the British, using White troops and Indian recruits, fought three major race wars against the Afghans: the First Anglo-Afghan War (1838-1842); the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-1880); and the Third Anglo-Afghan War (1919).
Just as the British colonies in North America seemed to be reaching a peak, the colonists themselves broke out in revolt against British rule, resulting in the American Revolution and War of Independence which occurred from 1776 to 1779.
The Black Matabele revolted against British rule almost immediately in 1896, but were put down with a massive show of arms by the White colonists, sparking off a conflict of that nature which would only finally end in 1980.
