First Men In The Moon is a 1964 science fiction film directed by Nathan Juran.
The movie begins in the 1960s with agroup of American astronauts, believing themselves to be the first lunar explorers, discovering a Union Jack on the moon's surface and a note naming Bedford and Cavor.
The film is an adaptation of the H.G. Wells novel The First Men in the Moon and is also known as H.G. Wells' First Men in the Moon.

The First Men in The Moon is a 1901 science fiction novel by the British author H.
At the Moon the two men at first discover a desolate landscape, but as the sun rises, the (fictionary) thick atmosphere of the Moon begins to melt and vaporise.
Apparently, Cavor had enjoyed a period of relative freedom in the Moon society, learnt to communicate with the Selenites and managed to build or access a radio transmitter with which he sent the story of his time inside the Moon using morse code.

The Selenites quickly learn English and interrogate Cavor, who believes they wish to exchange scientific knowledge.
In a plot twist "borrowed" from Wells' other famous novel The War of the Worlds, Bedford realises that the Selenites must have been killed off by Cavor's common cold viruses to which they had no immunity.

But they realize that they are not the first there when they discover a British flag and a summons for a Katherine Calender dated 1899 on the surface.
The issues of weightlessness and air and sound in a vacuum are conducted with a little more credibility than most pre-1969 Moon landing sf, although the script has the irritable tendency to bring up the fact that sound does not pass in a vacuum and then ignore it anyway.
Harryhausen animates a Moon calf but for time's sake he was forced not to animate most of the Selenties, but rather have them played by children and as a result the creations here must count as the most anonymous, least showcasey examples of Harryhausen's work.

The moon they discover is not barren; in daylight, a bevy of plants emerge from the ground only to wither and die as the lunar night returns.
Of course, Wells' moon is a far cry from the moon as we now know it, but it does seem to fit well into the framework of thinking at the time, at least insomuch as Wells describes those contemporary scientific ideas.
Though not the most recognized of his books, The First Men in the Moon may be the most original and visionary science fiction novel penned by this pioneering author.

The two men construct a vessel called the Sphere which hurls them to the moon.
His character may be a little rough around the edges (profit was the main reason he went to the moon), but he does show some heroic traits when trying to find Cavor as the death-cold of lunar night approaches.
The First Men on the Moon established itself as a piece of science fiction history almost a century ago and doesn't require my humble words to become greater than it is. But this new edition does great homage to the classic and is definitely worth the read.
