Equinox - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
More technically, the equinox happens when the Sun is at one of two opposite points on the celestial sphere where the celestial equator and ecliptic intersect.
First point of Aries and first point of Libra.
The equinoxes are now the points where the equator intersects the ecliptic and the solstices the points on the ecliptic farthest away from the equator.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Reform of the Calendar
The points where ecliptic and equator intersect are called the equinoxes.
In the northern hemisphere the March equinox (or "first point of Aries") is called the vernal equinox; the September equinox ("first point of Libra"), the autumnal.
The first was attained by the omission from the calendar of the ten superfluous days, so as to bring things back to their proper position.

The two intersections between ecliptic and celestial equator are the equinoctial points.
The days at which the Sun passes through these points may occur at different dates at different places on the Earth because of the timezone difference (occurring before midnight in one place and after midnight in the other).
Scientist Hipparchus used the equinoctial point to divide the day into twenty-four equinoctial hours (the length required for the Earth to perform one full rotation).

Astrology   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
The constellations were redrawn in 1930 to include a very small portion of Ophiuchus on the ecliptic, possibly in an attempt to try and discredit astrology and astrologers, though scientists at the time claimed that the redrawing took place for the sake of simplicity; this redrawing is where we get our mondern 88 constellations.
Oysters open and close their shells in synchronicity with the tide, and up until this time the explanation for this phenomenon was simple -- the physical force of the water gave the oysters some cue as to when to open and close their shells.
Brown placed his oysters in a controlled environment, and at first they responded as expected, opening and closing their shells in accord with the tide in New Haven.

 Biography of Astrologer Alan Leo
In the first case, in May 1914, he was acquitted on a technicality.
The starting point is the first point of Aries; half way round the circle is the first point of Libra; and points of the circle intermediate between these represent in a similar way the first points of Cancer and Capricorn respectively, the other signs taking up their positions in due order between these cardinal points.
Another vital fact, also established by experience (though we do not know how it was originally discovered), is that the first point of Aries is the point for us on Earth to measure from — it gives us our orientation.
