First consulship, the triumvirate and the conquest of Gaul
The death of Caesar's daughter Julia—married to Pompey—in childbirth in 54 BC and Crassus' death in battle against the Parthian empire the following year further weakened the bonds between the two men, and by 52 BC Pompey was openly allying himself the senate's anti-Caesarian faction.
After a series of political manoeuvrings between the senatorial faction and Caesar's agents in the senate—including the tribune of the plebs Mark Antony—it became clear that the senate was resolved to treat Caesar as a public enemy if he did not lay down his command.

When Caesar was in office in 59, the first thing he did was providing land for the veterans, and he constructed the agrarian bill, which would distribute land to the poor as well as the veterans.
So up until this point they were entirely successful and the objectives of the formation of the triumvirate were all seen to and equally importantly it was proof that the triumvirs were able to defeat the optimates in their measures.
To sum up, the triumvirs managed to achieve all their objectives and therefore in that sense they were totally successful and the opposition was totally destroyed, as Cicero was exiled and Cato was sent abroad, and on his return he was successfully prosecuted for extortion.

First Triumvirate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (via CobWeb/3.1 pl2.cs.utk.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The First Triumvirate is a common name among historians to refer to the unofficial political alliance of Gaius Julius Caesar, Marcus Licinius Crassus, and Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus.
Unlike the somewhat less famous "Second Triumvirate", the First Triumvirate had no official status whatsoever – its overwhelming power in the Roman state was strictly unofficial influence – and was in fact kept secret for some time as part of the political machinations of the Triumviri themselves.
The Triumvirate was kept secret until the Senate obstructed Caesar's proposed agrarian law establishing colonies of Roman citizens and distributing portions of the public lands (ager publicus).

Second Triumvirate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unlike the somewhat more famous "First Triumvirate", the Second Triumvirate was an official (if extraconstitutional) organization, whose overwhelming power in the Roman state was given full legal sanction and whose imperium maius outranked that of all other magistrates, including the consuls.
A historical oddity of the Triumvirate is that it was an effectual three-man dictatorate which included Antony, who in 44 BC had passed a lex Antonia which had abolished the dictatorate and expunged it from the Republic's constitutions.
As had been the case with both Sulla's and Julius Caesar's dictatorates, the members of the Triumvirate saw no contradiction between holding a supraconsular office and the consulate itself simultaneously (Lepidus was consul in 42 BC, Antony in 34 BC, and Octavian in 33 BC).

By the time the Second Triumvirate was cemented, Pompey had already taken control of the islands, and was lurking dangerously off the Italian shore.
While the first was really a secret pact that forced the 3 men to pledge mutual support, leaving the Republican system largely intact, this new triumvirate was a legal arrangement, written into the constitution by the Lex Titia in November, 43 BC.
With their agreement firmly in place, the triumvirate first focused on both gathering enough funds to stabilize their authority and eliminate political opposition.

Sulla at first prevaricated on the somewhat tenuous ground that he was not yet a senator, but when Pompey arrived at the gates of Rome with his army as yet undisbanded, he was forced to relent.
Achieving their aims taxed their political abilities to the limit, and in the succeeding years it was vital the triumvirs remain united to prevent the optimates from reversing their measures.
