First baseman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
First base, or 1B, is the first of four stations on a baseball diamond which must be touched in succession by a baserunner in order to score a run for that player's team.
Because the nature of play at first base often requires first baseman to stay close to the bag to hold runners in place or to reach the bag before the batter, first baseman are not typically expected to have the speed, agility, and quickness required of infielders and outfielders.
As a result, first base is (with the exception of the designated hitter) the easiest position on the baseball diamond to fill, a notion further evidenced by the fact that many players will move to first base later in their careers, as their range and athleticism decline.

Also, first base is often referred to as "the other hot corner"—the "hot corner" being third base—and he must have reflexes to field the hardest hit balls down the line, mainly by left handed batters.
When holding a runner on, the first baseman straddles the base with his feet while waiting for the throw.
In a fielding play, the first baseman generally stands with his off-glove foot touching the bag, and then stretches toward the throw.

A double play where the second baseman fields, throws to the shortstop at second base, who throws to the first baseman is recorded as a 4-6-3 double play.
The first baseman's job, in addition to fielding balls hit in his direction, is primarily to catch throws from the other infielders (2B, 3B and SS) in order to retire the batter and prevent him from getting on base.
When a runner is on first base, the first baseman will tend to stand on or near the bag, holding the runner close to prevent the runner from stealing second base.

Improving the First Baseman's Stretch by Coach Bruce Lambin
Then there is the first baseman (unless your stud left-handed pitcher also plays first).
By the time you get to pro ball, in the vast majority of cases the first baseman is the least athletic player on the field.
If you watch infield practice the first baseman invariably makes very little effort to “pick it.” They come off the bag on anything that isn’t right to their chest.

Reason for ball toss lost to history
Never, never is the ball handed to the first baseman, even though the first baseman is trotting toward the ballholder.
Not only is the first baseman involved in most defensive plays, but he is also the greeter, expected to provide lively chit-chat and gossip for any opposing players who reach first base.
So the first baseman is working hard, and by the time he gets back to the dugout, the last thing he wants to do is start rummaging around trying to find an infield ball.

Baseball: First baseman demoted - THE DAILY BRUIN ONLINE
Carrying high expectations and preseason accolades, UCLA first baseman Wes Whisler has struggled this season and was demoted last weekend to seventh in the batting order.
Compare this to.328 and 18 homers in his first year and there is some cause for concern in Westwood, especially when the lineup does not have a batter of similar renown.
One problem seems to be that Whisler is not getting enough lift on the ball, as many of his outs have been on the ground.
