First edition - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term first edition traditionally refers to all copies of a book printed with the same or substantially the same setting of type.
Publishers of trade books may mark a book "first edition" on the copyright page, but this may mean that it is the first edition by the current publisher, ignoring previous versions, or it may be the first edition with a particular set of illustrations or editorial commentary.
The word “first” in "first edition" might seem to refer to absolute chronological priority of publication, but in collecting and bibliographical terms, this is often not the case.

 What is a First Edition?
A first edition is the first published separate edition of a story, novel, poem, or any work of nonfiction in its earliest version.
Many modern first editions indicate they are later printings by dropping one of the numbers in a number sequence on the copyright page.
Their system is unusual in that it doesn't use a "1": it's almost as though the "1" were replaced by the words "First edition", because when the words "first edition" are lacking, it's a second printing.

How to identify first editions and book club editions. First edition identification.
To complicate matters, some publishers do not identify their first editions at all, or have used varying methods over the years.
A first edition will have a number line going down to two and will state "First Edition." For the second printing the First Edition statement will not be present, and the number line will go down to 2.
Another note here on the use of the term "first edition": To a publisher, all printings within an edition are the "first edition." But publishers are the only ones who use the term that way.
