First novel in English - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There are multiple candidates for first novel in English partly because of ignorance of earlier works, but largely because the term novel can be defined so as to exclude earlier candidates:
The phrase "first true novel" is probably an indication that "novel" is being carefully defined so as to exclude earlier candidates than the one the writer has in mind.
Due to the influence of Ian Watt's seminal study in literary sociology, The Rise of the Novel: Studies in Defoe, Richardson and Fielding (1957), Watt's candidate, Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe (1719), gained wide acceptance.

 first novel
The novel is differentiated from its predecessors by its internal cohesion, its emphasis on a tightly orchestrated plot and action, its realistic portrayal of characters and situations.
The novel thus has its origin in the attempt to regulate writing, to propose a correct and decorous means of taming the potential dangers of the written word.
The novel's hegemony has recently been questioned by John Barth, who announced the death of the novel, and its "demise" has inspired the writers of the new novel, the post modern novel and hypertext fiction.

Xbox.com :: Halo: Spotlight: Book Report: First Strike
Nylund's first novel set in the Halo-verse simultaneously laid the foundations for the origins of the SPARTAN program, gave us all our first in-depth look at the man under Master Chief's helmet, and blew readers away with the intense, desperate battle against the Covenant that led the Pillar of Autumn to Halo.
First Strike is even better in almost every way, and lets newcomers to the novel series jump onboard.
So, in a titular theme that will recur throughout the novel, Master Chief decides to lead all of the survivors in a first strike against their enemies—they must capture a Covenant ship and get Cortana's Halo data (and mankind's first-ever look at Covenant starship tech) back to Earth, pronto.

Writing Your First Novel   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Most novels begin as an idea, which may be a special character, a setting, a conflict, or a challenge for a character.
But a daydream is not a novel or a story unless it has conflict between characters, a change of events or relationships over time, and a resolution.
Your novel will be better reading if your protagonist has some internal conflict, too, something in him that fights his getting what he wants.

They are hungry for success and spend years researching, developing, writing, and rewriting their first novel only to get lost on the bookshelves.

 Andrei Codrescu, Author
Andrei Codrescu has written a fascinating first novel based on the life of his real-life ancestor, Elizabeth Bathory, the legendary Blood Countess.
Drake relates his tale to a judge in new York, and it takes the form of a confession in which he reveals his involvement in a murder and admits to the dark-soul legacy of his horrible ancestor, from which he can't seem to escape.
Fortunately, the bulk of the narrative concerns the blood-soaked realm of the countess, conjuring a historically rooted nightmare that is hard to resist.

Interestingly, the drunken and violent yahoos who are the primary cause of suffering for some of the main characters are identified neither with the fraternities or the sports teams, but are simply their own group, initially the Wild and Crazy Guys, and later, the Terrorists.
Some of my affection for The Big U derives from the way I first read it Matt and I watched the growing Cult of Stephenson with a little dismay, as the pioneers of any wildeness are saddened as their forests becomes farms and then bedroom communities.
