It is generally considered to be a 2.5D engine as the basic world geometry is two-dimensional with an added height component as each sector may have a different ceiling and floor height, and the ceiling and floor may be angled along one line of the sector.
The engine was designed by John Carmack, who also created previous engines such as those for Doom and Quake, which are also generally recognised as marking significant advances in the field.
Engines that included games that have first person view and a third person view are included.

"First person is dead as a perspective." So said one of the designers of one of the most famous first-person perspective PC action games of the '90s.
In a first person game the camera always looks wherever the player is looking, and since the character is always in a "valid" location in the game-world, the camera is always in the same position relative to this character.
In a first person game, the player sees their actions carried out by the movement of their camera through the world or the changing state of that world as viewed by their character.

Generation 2 game engines are the first to do real 3d, this is also the largest segment because of it's key feature, it has to use at least lightmapped textured polygons as a main rendering method, other requirements are basic physics (gravity) and stereo sound.
The Doom 3 engine was the first game engine to comply with the gen 3 requirements and can therefore be seen as the absolute minimum of what a third gen game engine should be able to do, but as other more recent engines like Unreal Engine 3 show us what you can do with it.
Generation 4 game engines does not currently exist but, one of the key features would be the the use of ray tracing as a main rendering method instead of or in conjunction with rasterization like is used today.

First one company has a good idea, and, if that company makes a great execution of that idea, everyone else jumps on the bandwagon and follows suit.
First cut-scene into the game sees you arrive at Base Camp and told to have a bit of a walk around, get to know the boys, stop by the firing range for a bit of practice and then see your CO to begin your first tour.
There is a noise about the graphics, infact the entire screen has a whitenoise layer over it, which is a bit wierd at first but I can only assume is there to help anti-alias edges and the like and help the environment feel more believeable by, well, blurring it a bit.

The background graphics set the mood for each level perfectly, I really felt as if I was there getting ready to blast my way through an oil rig.

The first two negatives are very minor when compared to the standards by which games should be rated, such as quality gameplay, fun factor, immersiveness, etc. The reviewer made little to no mention of these, which IMO (in my opinion) should be covered when reviewing a game.
As for the graphics comment, yes, Empire at War doesn’t have cutting-edge FPS (first-person shooter) graphics, but it is still a visually fantastic game.
Graphics engines aren’t everything; the art direction and composition is superb.
