FIASI - Hall of Fame - Fischer Black   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Fischer didn't seem to allow his work-life to be dominated by the multiplexing, interrupt-driven set of precedences that became a way of life for anyone who'd been at an investment bank for more than a few months.
Fischer was an inspiring role model, for people interested in financial modeling, though he was a little too exceptional in his historical contribution and reputation to fit that role perfectly.
Fischer always encouraged you to refuse to be swayed by politics, and reinvigorated your sense that it was important to do the right thing, which was to produce the best quality work you could.

 Fischer Random Chess / Chess960 / FullChess
Fischer Random Chess (also called Chess960, Chess 960, Fischerandom chess, FR chess, or FullChess) is a chess variant created by Grandmaster Bobby Fischer (the World Champion of chess from 1972 until 1975).
Fischer's goal was to create a chess variant in which chess creativity and talent would be more important than memorization and analysis of opening moves.
Thus 1 indicates the first fl square from the left (a1 in algebraic notation), 2 indicates the second fl square from the left (c1), 3 indicates the third (e1), and 4 indicates the fourth (g1).

EconLog, Perry Mehrling, Fischer Black, and Elvis, Arnold Kling: Library of Economics and Liberty
In this essay, I continue to praise Perry Mehling's biography of Fischer Black.
Thanks to an outstanding new intellectual biography by Perry Mehrling, I have been reminded of Fischer Black's distinctive perspective on finance and economics.
Black might have argued that even if it is only an approximation, the assumption of perfect markets is the most logical approximation with which to start.

 Barnard College Newscenter
When Perry Mehrling arrived at Barnard in 1987 to begin teaching economics, one of the first things he did was write a letter to Fischer Black, the man considered to be the "high priest" of modern finance.
Black was working at Goldman Sachs in New York then and Mehrling wrote a one-page letter introducing himself and commenting on Black's ideas and theories.
Having first encountered Black's work in graduate school, Mehrling spent seven years reviewing Black's personal files (where he found a copy of that early letter), and countless hours interviewing his associates and family members, in order to piece together the larger story.

Fischer Black and the Revolutionary Idea of Finance
Fischer Black had degrees in physics and mathematics but no formal training in economics.
Comment: Fischer Black's life and somewhat rebellious style of thinking are taken under the lens in Fischer Black and The Revolutionary Idea of Finance.
While the author only indirectly points to Fischer Black's controversial insights and revolutionary attitude as a potential cause, we are left to speculate about the reason why he was not awarded the Nobel Prize.

Black's fertile intellect also honed in on the theory of money and business cycles, where he mounted a searching critique of macroeconomic orthodoxy, and sketched the beginning of an alternative.

Wiley-VCH - Mehrling, Perry - Fischer Black and the Revolutionary Idea of Finance
Black deciphered the universe of modern finance in ways that went underappreciated for many years-and would have won the Nobel Prize in Economics, if not for his untimely death in 1995.
While there is no question that Fischer Black is well-known within the investment and quantitative community, he still remains a mystery to those outside of these fields.
Fischer Black and the Revolutionary Idea of Finance demystifies this genius of finance and provides an engaging and entertaining look at a man whose life's work encapsulates modern financial theory.

BLACK - SCHOLES -- OPTION PRICING MODELS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Black had been working for Arthur D. Little in Cambridge, Mass., when he met a colleague who had devised a model for pricing securities and other assets.
His colleague's model focused on stocks, so Black turned his attention to options, which were not widely traded at the time.
By 1973, the tandem team of Fischer Black and Myron Scholes had written the first draft of a paper that outlined an analytic model that would determine the fair market value for European type call options on non-payout assets.

The Fischer Black Prize honors the memory of Fischer Black, formerly a General Partner at Goldman Sachs and Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, whose seminal research included the development (with Myron Scholes) of the widely applied Black-Scholes Option Pricing Model.
It is awarded for a body of work that best exemplifies the Fischer Black hallmark of developing original research that is relevant to finance practice.
The winner must either be under age 40, or under age 45 for a winner who had not been awarded a Ph.D. (or equivalent) by age 35.

Amazon.co.jp: Fischer Black And The Revolutionary Idea Of Finance: 洋書: Perry Mehrling
In a 30-year career equally divided between academics (University of Chicago) and Wall Street, Black contributed seminal papers in almost every area of finance and many areas of economics, but few were published in major peer-reviewed journals and many were never published at all.
He spent most of his time alone in a room thinking and writing, was uncomfortable in large groups, an undistinguished lecturer and famously eccentric in ways more irritating than amusing or dramatic.
As far as Black goes, Mehrling gives a clear picture of his working life and reveals the strong family ties and close personal friendships of a man often thought to have been emotionless.
