DNR - Berrien Springs Fish Ladder
It is the first dam that fish need to negotiate a ladder to continue their upstream migration.
Competed in 1975 at a cost of $692,500, it was the 2nd major fish ladder completed in the state after the completion of the 6th Street Dam fish ladder on the Grand River in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
This is the only ladder on the St. Joseph River that is a pool-weir since it allows for a sea lamprey barrier in its design.

Fish ladders provide salmon and other migratory fish species with a way to navigate around large dams.
Even with the aid of fish ladders, however, many fish are unable to circumnavigate large dams.
Fish that cannot bypass the dams typically die before they are able to reproduce.

Fish would pause on their upstream migration until the reservoir was evacuated and the embankments were removed.
Fish ladder flow pumping stations would have to be installed and functional prior to beginning drawdown.

AFRP - Daguerre Point Dam fish ladder modification, diversion improvements- Feasibility study and preliminary ...
Passage improvement options that will be evaluated include structural modification to the fish ladders and the dam spillway to maintain appropriate adult and juvenile salmonid passage conditions; complete reconstruction of one or both fish ladders to allow adult passage under a greater range of flows; and dam removal.
Additional fish screen evaluations and modification options, subsequent to initial engineering consideration for the fish ladders must be coordinated through the AFSP and the respective irrigation districts and the Yuba County Water Agency (YCWA).
Modification to the existing fish ladders, construction of new ones, or dam removal would clearly improve the ability of migrating salmonids to pass this barrier over a greater range of flows, allowing access to what is generally considered the most productive habitat in the lower Yuba River.

Purpose: The fish ladder was built in 1996 by a private contractor to help fish species move up Gunnison River around the Redlands division dam which was built in 1918 to divert water for power and irrigation.
There are several exotic (non-native) species of fish that through the years have been introduced accidentally or intentionally in the river such as the channel catfish, various trout, bass, red shiner, northern pike, and fathead minnow.
This draws the fish towards the enterence to the fish ladder.

The Amoskeag Fishways - About Us
Anadromous fish are born and grow in the fresh water of rivers and streams, but live as adults in the salt water of oceans.
Anadromous fish populations began to decline during that time since the fish were unable to pass the dams to reach their traditional spawning grounds.
This ladder was built as part of an effort to restore anadromous fish populations to the Merrimack River.

FEATURE--Can a fish climb a ladder?   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Fish ladders are specially designed devices that allow fish to get around dams, and they’re an important environmental feature for many hydropower plants
When fish can’t move freely up and down rivers to spawn, fish species are drastically impacted.
Knowing how important fish were to this river and to the region, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) designed the dams with two completely different ways to move the fish around the obstacle presented by the dam.
