World Builders 6 Fishes E Viau CSULA
Fishes have two problems to solve: one is physical, the problem of moving in the water: the other is chemical, the problem of keeping their body fluids at the right balance of salinity (saltiness).
Fishes need to be buoyant: if their bodies were too heavy they would lie on the bottom of the lake or sea and would have to work hard to swim.
Fishes are cold blooded, which means that their bodies are at the same temperature as the surrounding water.

Life on the Reef: The Amazing World of Coral Fishes   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Many fishes are able to feed during the day because their food--corals, seaweeds and various animals attached to the reef--is available out in the open at all times.
Fishes that feed on more active animals often wait until dusk or later, in order to pick off fishes as they scramble for night shelter or to catch crabs, octopuses and other invertebrates emerging from their holes in the reef.
Many of the larger fishes on or around coral reefs are hunters, either of other fishes or of active invertebrates such as squid, cuttlefish, octopuses and crabs.

Saltwater Game Fishes of The World - reviewed by Terry Lawton
The Fishes covers the broadbill swordfish, sailfish and marlin, tuna and mackerel, sharks, dolphin, bluefish, striped bass, tarpon, bonefish and cobia - which is new to me. Zane Grey is quoted as stating in 1936 that the bonefish was the most challenging of the fish that he had caught.
The final chapters cover the origins of sea fishing as a sport, the pioneers of ocean gamefishing, the tackle used, early writings on saltwater fishing and salwater gamefishing classics and a final chapter on the sport coming of age.
He has fished many of the world's best hot spots and his knowledge and counsel on big game fish is sought by anglers and scientists alike.

They support an immense diversity of fishes throughout the tropics, including over 4,000 species, which range in size from a giant grouper, 3 m (9.8 ft) long, to a minute goby, barely 1 cm (0.4 in) in length.
In this seminar, Linda Pitkin--award-winning underwater photographer and entomologist at The Natural History Museum, London--explores some of the varied specializations that enable coral fishes to live in every part of the reef environment, the means by which they derive food and shelter from the reefs, and their interactions--often fiercely territorial--in a densely populated living space.
The appeal of coral fishes lies not only in the exquisite beauty for which some are renowned, but in their fascinating lifestyles and behaviour.

 Naturalized Fishes of the World
All over the world fish are both an important part of a region's biological diversity and a valuable human resource either for food or as a sporting or amenity asset.
This human interest in fish has inevitably led to the widespread practice of introducing various species to waters outside their normal range.
This book describes where, when, how, and by whom the alien inland fishes now living in a wild state throughout the world were introduced, how they subsequently became naturalized and what, if any, effects they have had in their new environment.

Ocean Update   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
As scientific and media attention focuses on the ongoing effort to map the human genome, a new program, Species 2000, is seeking to document what it calls the "Earth's genome," the more than 1.75 million species so far described on the planet.
One contributor to this project is FishBase, an electronic encyclopedia of fishes that was launched 10 years ago by the International Center for Living Aquatic Resources Management (ICLARM), as a project aiming to provide key information on all of the 25,000 known species of fishes in the world's oceans and freshwaters.
According to FishBase, the results to this point show that "mapping the Earth's biodiversity is achievable, even for large, species-rich groups such as fishes, given a willingness for key players to share their resource, and thus provide an example that encourages other players to join.
