  Fisheye Photos and Theory
A 15mm fisheye is described as a distorting lens, while a 15mm wideangle is "corrected".
The fisheye is not a distorted perspective, it is actually the natural perspective for an extreme wide angle.
None of the three full circle lens combinations I have used indicate what their mapping is, in fact I suspect that "semi fisheye" means that the makers are not altogether sure themselves.

 Circular Fisheye Camera
Fisheye photo of bridge and downtown Saskatoon: Parallel view, Cross view, Closeup (2d).
This lens is a full frame fisheye which means that it is 180 degrees angle of view only on the diagonals.
By checking infinity focus at the top, bottom, left and right of the image I could tell that the lens is slightly tilted relative to the film plane but only by the with of the 2.2 markings on the lens.

CameraHobby - Nikon 16mm f2.8D AF Fisheye Lens Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
The lens hood is a permanent feature to protect the slightly bulbous front element, which obviously negates the use of any front filter; however, as part of the package, Nikon supplies you with four rear-mount filters in a small pouch.
The 16mm lens offers a 180-degree view of the world, but keep in mind that this is measured diagonally across the film frame, not horizontally as would be the case with regular wide-angle lenses.
The lens is a hoot to use and spectacular for seeing the world as your move the camera up and down and all around, seeing in a different way.

Since the fisheye converter FC-E8 is heavy, the Photosolve 37-28mm thread converter is not able to hold it sturdy in the thread.
In this case, the combo is a 7mm circular fisheye lens with a coverage of about 180 degree.

NEWS! - Olympus: New Zuiko fisheye lens
The Zuiko 8mm fisheye is designed to be digital specific and render sharp edge-to-edge images, in an easy to handle size, and with a close focus of less than 5 ½ inches.
This full frame fisheye lens has a 180º field of view diagonally to the Four Thirds image sensor, and a focal length of 8mm (equivalent to 16mm in a 35mm camera).
ED Lens Element Used to Minimize Chromatic Aberration: By using an ED lens element, Olympus eliminates peripheral chromatic aberration, focusing all the colors accurately from edge to edge, which cannot be fully corrected with conventional optical glasses.

 Computer Generated Angular Fisheye Projections
An angular fisheye projection is defined so that distance from the center of the image is proportional to the angle from the camera view direction.
Unfortunately if the projector uses a single fisheye lens then the standard fisheye projection as described here requires that both the lens and the viewer are located at the center of the dome, obviously impossible.
This is a standard projector with their fisheye lens and as such the projector projects a 4:3 width to height ratio while fisheye images are 1:1.

Creating Environment Maps from FishEye Lenses
This type of lens was first developed to allow astronomers to capture the entire hemisphere of the night sky with one photograph.
At a certain point, around a 15 mm lens, it is just too hard to compensate for the distortion in the lens design, so lenses are instead designed with a predictable, analytical distortion: the fisheye lens.
Fisheye lenses, on the other hand, should be though of as imaging to a spherical surface; this spherical surface is then flattened to record it on planar film.

Enter the fisheye lens, which is different and imparts a look to a photo that you can’t get any other way, even digitally.
As you’d expect, the built-in lens shade is a little less than an exercise in futility, with four little slivers of fl metal that protect the lens from the sun as best they can on parts that aren’t in the picture.

Carefully sealing the camera and lens using plastic wrap, the camera was mounted on the end of a 10' long PVC pipe and used to feed live video inspecting the underwater vegetation and fish population in Dietz's two half-acre ponds.
The fisheye lens was there to fix the alignment, but it pretty much blocks access to the two tiny screws that mount the original lens and board to the back of the plastic case.

Wide angle choices for digital SLRs - Fisheye Lenses
The second type is known as a "circular fisheye" and produces a 24mm diameter circular image in the center of a 35mm frame, with a 180 degree field of view all around.
A 16mm fisheye on an EOS 20D, produces an image which, when "defished" has something like the horizontal field of view of a 20mm lens on a full frame camera (or a 12.5mm rectilinear lens on an APS-C sensor camera).
There is also a 16mm f2.8 fisheye made in Ukraine called the "Zenitar" and I have a review of that lens elsewhere on this website (Zenitar 16/2.8 fisheye review).

Average Japanese fisheye lens worth anywhere from 400$ for el cheapo models from Sigma to 4000$-5000$ precision models from other vendors.
All there is about the lens is half a page explaining that you should focus with opened diaphragm, then close (or lock) the diaphragm and that's all.
Fisheye distortion itself is interesting, and definitely can be used in pictures as is, just some cropping to cut of dark corners.

Zenitar 16mm f2.8 fisheye lens for Canon EOS
The Canon 15mm fisheye is quite expensive (around $600) so doesn't really make sense for a lens you may not use much.
The lens comes with red, yellow and green filters which screw on to the rear of the lens and a small carrying pouch (or at least mine did).
Well, you get a horizontal field of view which is about the same as that of a 20mm lens on a full frame camera - but you also get curved lines when those lines don't run through the cneter of the frame which is a characteristic of all fisheye lenses.

One solution is to optically convert the 6 mm fisheye lens image into a smaller image that correctly fits within the active area of the Nikon D1 image sensor.
A lens coupling tube is needed to position the 6 mm fisheye lens at the correct point relative to the 85 mm lens.
The above fisheye image was produced by a Nikon 6 mm f5.6 fisheye lens coupled to a Nikon D1 digital camera via an optical relay.

For a detailed comparison of several fisheye lenses, see the report Fisheye lens designs and their relative performance by James Kumler and Martin Bauer.
The lens cap is a good example for a ‘silly quirk’ that – although it doesn't directly affect the resulting images – simply cries for being fixed.
Then you can use the lens to compose the image and before actually shooting you just have to remove the lens, lockup the mirror, mount the lens, shoot, remove the lens, release the mirror, and mount the lens again.

The only other fisheye that has a similar price range is the circular fisheye Peleng 3.5/8 mm that is used for 35 mm cameras.
Although this fisheye is the most complex construction (10 elements in 6 groups) of all the lenses from Kiev, it has a very good reputation.
As I don't have another full-frame MF fisheye to compare with, I can't say if this is a fault specific to the Kiev lens or the lens type in general.

 Fisheye Lens Information
The name Fisheye was coined by R.W. Wood to refer to any lens capable of imaging the entire hemisphere in object space onto a finite circle in the focal plane.
Typical horizontal coverage of this type of Fisheye lens is around 140 degrees, typical vertical coverage is around 90 degrees, focal length is 15 or 16mm.
Fisheye lens is not so commonly used; the prize is often higher compared to other wide angle lenses and it is generally considered as having very limited use.

Fisheye lenses were first developed for scientific purposes, but soon found their way into "normal use" (whatever that is).
A circular fisheye lens is the only thing missing in Nikon's current digital lineup (September 2006), and I guess that can be used as an argument for Nikon to develop a full frame DSLR (which I'm convinced they already are, but that's another discussion).

Olympus Zuiko Digital Fish Eye lens: Digital Photography Review
The lens has a special multi-layer coating designed to reduce susceptibility to ghosting and flaring and its ED element will help keep chromatic aberration to a minimum.
An ED element is used to ensure chromatic aberration is kept to an absolute minimum, whilst the special multi-coating process that the lens undergoes during the manufacturing process substantially reduces susceptibility to ghosting and flaring.
The lens is also resistant to dust and water droplets so remains protected under more challenging conditions such as an unexpected rain shower.

 0.42x Fisheye Adapter Review
For some reason fisheye lenses tend not to be all that common on the used market, and seem to hold up their value pretty well when they do appear.
(Of course, fisheye lenses have to have rather minimalist hoods owing to their great field of view, so this isn’t very surprising) There are soft plastic caps for both the front and rear of the adapter, but they tend to fall off when the adapter isn’t in its storage bag.
The lens “glass” of the fisheye section itself appears to be a single lump (possibly two) of moulded plastic, and is uncoated.

Overall, I have been pleased with the lens for casual use, but it is not as sharp as my Nikon 8mm (in mid-2004, after 4 years without one, I broke down and bought a used Nikkor 8mm lens from KEH in Atlanta, Georgia)
There are other versions of the circular fisheye (7.5mm, 8mm, 10mm), many of which I haven't mentioned, but one that is sure to instill awe is the massive Nikon 6mm, 220ƒ f/2.8, $14,000 monster...

Nikon Patent 6987623: Image size changeable fisheye lens system
When a fisheye lens for a 35 mm film format SLR camera is attached to a digital SLR camera, the angle of view becomes severely narrow, so that a special effect of a fisheye lens becomes difficult to be obtained.
When the lens system is attached to a camera having the maximum image size in the maximum focal length state, the lens system has an angle of view of 170 degrees or more.
When the lens system is attached to a camera having the minimum image size in the minimum focal length state, the lens system has an angle of view of 170 degrees or more.
