If a graph of the mass or mole yield of fission products against the atomic mass of the fragments is drawn then it has two peaks, one in the area strontium through to palladium and one at iodine through to neodymium.
Some fission products are useful as beta and gamma sources in medicine and industry, see common beta emitters and commonly used gamma emitting isotopes for more details.

Nuclear fission - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fission is useful as a power source because some materials, called nuclear fuels, both generate neutrons as part of the fission process and also undergo triggered fission when impacted by a free neutron.
Fission products have, on average, about the same ratio of neutrons and protons as their parent nucleus, and are therefore usually unstable because they have proportionally too many neutrons compared to stable isotopes of similar mass.
Fission products tend to be beta emitters, emitting fast-moving electrons to conserve electric charge as excess neutrons convert to protons inside the nucleus of the fission product atoms.

FISSION PRODUCT DISPOSAL IN PERMANENT ICE FIELDS
The remaining fission products will have to be isolated from the environment for 800 years after which they are no more hazardous than the uranium ore from which they originated [2], or the uranium ore that must also exist naturally under such large icecaps as the Greenland icecap.
From Table 2 it is seen that the beta activity of the major fission products after ten years of storage contributes 1470 W. per tonne of spent fuel, or 3.3x1470=4851 W. for the 3.3 tons that correspond to the 100 kg of fission product oxides in the core volume.

SCOPE 50 - Radioecology after Chernobyl, Chapter1, Sources
A primary fission product is usually the starting point of a sequence of decays, each daughter nuclide tending to have a half-life longer than its parent, until a stable nuclide is reached.
Since residual uranium, fission products and actinide elements are contained in the fuel upon discharge from the reactor, a period of on-site storage (in reactor ponds) is necessary to allow the decay of short-lived radioactivity prior to transport for reprocessing.
Fission and activation products dispersed as global fallout from nuclear tests are the most important, and to a lesser extent are those from reactor accidents and other releases from peaceful uses of nuclear energy such as fuel reprocessing.

technetium - Hutchinson encyclopedia article about technetium
It occurs in nature only in extremely minute amounts, produced as a fission product from uranium in pitchblende and other uranium ores.
It was synthesized in 1937 (named in 1947) by Italian physicists Carlo Perrier and Emilio Segrè, who bombarded molybdenum with deuterons, looking to fill a gap in the periodic table of the elements (at that time it was considered not to occur in nature).
It was later isolated in larger amounts from the fission product debris of uranium fuel in nuclear reactors.

Fission Product Selection Criteria There is no unique way to define the nuclear properties of a pseudo fission product.
To separate out the important fission products a set of criteria was developed, based on the analytical equations that govern the build-up and decay of the nuclides.
The pseudo fission product multigroup constants were calculated by a weighted average of the constants of the constituents.

Fission transmutation reactions produce mostly short-lived fission products that decay into stable elements, but some of these short-lived fission products can also decay into long-lived ones.
Because fuel fabrication does not involve the production of liquid waste, its effects are mainly restricted to workers and are on the same order as for workers in the reprocessing sector.
Fission products are radioactive (generally by beta decay).

Further progress is achievable by incorporating the negative reactivity effects of a subset of neutron-absorbing fission product isotopes.
Their calculations validated the French approach of obtaining the majority of available credit from all fission products by considering a subset of only six fission product isotopes.
Comparing this negligible risk component to the reduction in common transport risks due to a reduced number of fuel shipments leads to the conclusion that using burnup credit is preferable to using the fresh fuel assumption.

 Nuclear Fission Fragments
When uranium-235 undergoes fission, the average of the fragment mass is about 118, but very few fragments near that average are found.
Most of these fission fragments are highly unstable (radioactive), and some of them such as cesium-137 and strontium-90 are extremely dangerous when released to the environment.
This particular set of fragments from uranium-235 fission undergoes a series of beta decays to form stable end products.

Burn-up Measurements on FBTR Spent Fuel   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
The measurement of burn-up involves the identification, separation and determination of the concentration of a suitable fission product monitor followed by the correlation of the concentration of fission product monitor and that of heavy elements such as uranium and plutonium to the total number of fissions in the fuel.
Nd as the fission product monitor yielded a burn-up value that is slightly lower : 1.95 atom per cent fission.
In this method, the concentration of selected fission product elements is measured by chromatographic separation coupled with on-line spectrophotometric measurement.

IEER Report: Transmutation - Nuclear Alchemy Gamble
One of the biggest obstacles facing the nuclear industry is what to do with the nuclear waste generated in the form of spent fuel discharged from commercial reactors or in the form of high-level waste originating from the extraction of plutonium from spent fuel.
Of the long-lived fission products, only technetium-99 and iodine-129 have the potential to be fabricated into targets and transmuted in a reactor.
The actinides could either undergo fission or capture a neutron, though for the purposes of transmutation, which is trying to reduce the amount of actinides, fission is preferred.

Models have been developed to predict the transport of metallic and gaseous fission products (FPs) through the multilayered fuel particle coatings and the graphite matrix of the core under accident conditions.
The amount of fission products released is small and the release occurs slowly over a period of days as the pebble heats up.

Symmetric and asymmetric fission in $^{232}$Th($p$,f) at 190 MeV   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
In reactions at higher energies, the role of multi-chance fission as well as the influence of a high excitation energy on the fission fragment properties can be investigated.
Especially in the region of the actinides where symmetric and asymmetric fission modes compete, an increase in excitation energy will have a strong effect on the resulting fission-product mass yields.
This leads to mass distributions encompassing contributions of many fissioning nuclides, with their own ratio of symmetric to asymmetric fission depending on the isotope and the excitation energy.

Both sets of drawings showed separate fission and fusion stages inside opposite ends of a hollow cylinder, an idea that the government later argued in court was one of three essential elements of the H-bomb secret: separation of stages.
By the mid-1940s, it was known that a lot of fission could supply the heat to cause a little fusion, and that a little fusion could in turn produce the neutrons to cause a lot more fission, with the ultimate yield being limited only by the amount of uranium in the bomb.
In uranium fission, 90% of the energy is released as the kinetic energy of highly-charged, fully- ionized fission fragments.

 Tb004: Radioactivity Data
Fission reactor calculations require good capture cross sections for about 200 important fission-product nuclides, and they need capture, fission, and higher reactions for a large number of actinide isotopes.
These distributions are very important for the operation of fission power reactors; they affect parasitic absorption, on-power decay heat, decay heat after shutdown or emergency scram, and delayed neutrons (which are important factors for reactor kinetics and control).
This calculation requires you to solve a set of coupled differential equations stating the balance between producing (by a reaction, or as a fission product) and destroying (by a reaction, or by decay) each possible nuclide.
