Fistful of Metal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fistful of Metal is the name of the debut album by the band Anthrax.
The album was released in January of 1984 by Megaforce Records in the United States and Music For Nations elsewhere.
The band and Carl Canedy produced the album, which was released as a double album (along with the Armed and Dangerous (EP)) in Germany in 2000.

 Metal-Rules.com 80's Metal Rules!
In the mid to late 80's the metal and hard rock scene was really being dominated by bands wearing too much make-up and worrying about how many chicks would be at their show then they were about the music.
Like all truly great players, these metal bands play for the love of playing; they don't merely rest on their proverbial laurels or quietly fade away, because it never was just about how many hit records they had, or how much money they could make, or about being "rock stars" in the first place.
What most of the 90s metal fans seem to forget is that there were loads of great bands that came out of the 80s that made groundbreaking music and paved the way for the wide diversity of metal that we all listen today.

For some reason, these two Anthrax releases were very hard to find, and i always thought 'Fistful' was greatly overlooked and neglected, so i am glad Scott Ian and crew have not forgotten their awesome debut album and decided to reissue it for the 20th anniversary.
'Fistful of Metal' is probably the most brutal Anthrax album, for one thing, they had this guy called Neil Turbin who could scream his head off.
Fistful of Metal is one of the all time great metal albums.

I was new to metal at the time, so I guess you could say that these guys really influenced my listening habits from that time on.
We were thinking of putting together a boxset for this year for the 20th anniversary of the 'Fistful of Metal' record.
It's just hearing his voice, the sound of his voice especially on the stuff from 'Fistful of Metal' for me, it's great and has kind of enabled me to step outside myself being in the band and just listening to it from that point of view.

Belladonna helped take the band farther away from conventional metal clichés, and over the next five albums (with the exception of 1988's State of Euphoria, where the band sounded like they were in a creative straitjacket), Anthrax arguably became the leaders of speed metal.
Once the kings of the Bay Area metal scene (widely accepted as the birthplace of thrash), Exodus were unceremoniously demoted from their post with the arrival of Los Angeles' Metallica in 1982.
Released to positively wild public and critical acclaim at the height of the thrash metal boom, Annihilator's 1989 debut, Alice in Hell, was an unqualified triumph and epitomized the state of the art in terms of thinking man's thrash metal, but it was hardly a band effort.

Fistful of Metal is also home to the classic Metal Thrashing Mad, which the band sometimes plays during shows, and the aggressive Deathrider with its fast tempo (320).
In short, with all of this album's songs, Deathrider, Metal Thrashing Mad, I'm Eighteen, Panic, Subjugator, Soldiers of Metal, Death From Above, Anthrax, Across the River et Howling Furies to name them all, the guys from Anthrax assure a job well done, contrary to the production which is a bit weak.
Finally, Fistful of Metal remains a classic and is the starting point for a band with its place in thrash/speed metal history!

I thought The Crown's last CD "Crowned In Terror" was an excellent slice of thrashy Death Metal, but I had a hard time stomaching Tomas Lindberg's screamy nattering on the vocals.
The Crown have always been about keeping some thrashy goodness in their metal, and this album is perhaps their best synthesis of old-school Thrash with Swedish Death.
This album is just a solid crushing fistful of metal mayhem from the opening blast of "No Tomorrow" through the instrumental "In Memoriam" and every track in between.

(Just listen to the 10 second scream on "Metal Thrashing Mad" where he goes from high to higher.) The guitars are rather generic for the time (Exodus like) and the bass (Lilker) sometimes kicks up some cool lines but is otherwise just as ordinary.

As one of the so-called Big Four of 80's thrash metal (alongside Metallica, Slayer, and Megadeth), Anthrax enjoyed massive success in the 80's and still command a strong presence to this day.
The group debuted with the raw, Metallica-ish Fistful Of Metal (the two bands being early signings to the Megaforce label), but it was the arrival of distinctive vocalist Joey Belladonna that coincided with the band taking off, with albums such as Spreading The Disease and Among The Living being bonafide thrash classics.
Despite good albums and Bush's unquestionable talent, Anthrax's popularity waned somewhat during the nineties, the band still holding on to their large fan base but not at the metal forefront as in years past.

Like Metallica and Megadeth, Anthrax was responsible for the emergence of speed and thrash metal; combining the speed and fury of hardcore with the guitars and vocals of heavy metal, they helped create a new sub-genre of heavy metal.
Their first album, "Fistful of Metal," included original singer Neil Turbin and featured the now classic song, "Metal Thrashing Mad." It also introduced fans to this new brutal style of metal.
Belladonna helped take the band farther away from conventional metal cliches and was a catalyst in making Anthrax arguably become the leaders of speed metal.

Any dose of Pro-Pain can be considered predictable, but “Fistful of Hate” is a refreshing surprise.
“Shreds of Dignity” found Pro-Pain headed down the road of thrash, but “Fistful of Hate” brings the band back to their hardcore leanings and throws in clean picking, distinct melody, and even an instrumental track that proves this band knows more than skull-pulping riffs.
Pro-Pain fans and the casual metal fan can find something rewarding on “Fistful of Hate.” “Fistful of Hate” might not be anything new but it certainly is one of the best releases in the Metal/Hardcore genre.

With few exceptions, rap-metal is far and away the domain of white musicians coming to the form from the metal side of the equation.
Some metal bands had come to associate hardcore rap with the street-tough urban attitude they wanted to project, and after "Bring the Noise," they suddenly found it possible to experiment with fusing the two.
Many of these efforts focused not on the linguistic and rhythmic complexity of rap, but on the cathartic intensity that could be achieved by sort of shout-rapping the lyrics instead of singing them.

Born Scott Rosenfeld and raised in Queens, New York, Scott fell under the spell of Kiss early on, resulting in an interest in guitar, and by the early '80s, the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motorhead, etc.).
Anthrax would soon become one of the world's top thrash bands, on the strength of a string of classic metal releases - 1985's Spreading the Disease, 1987's Among the Living, 1988's State of Euphoria, and 1990's Persistence of Time.
But there has been an 'accomplishment' or two he's undoubtedly not exactly proud of, such as drunkenly breaking into a training facility of the New York Yankee's and being arrested in 1997.

Anthrax's only recorded work with original singer Neil Turbin remains the group's 1984 debut, FISTFUL OF METAL.
While the band's songwriting would improve and its sound would become more focused on later releases (1987's AMONG THE LIVING, for example), FISTFUL OF METAL contains at least one bona fide Anthrax classic.
The best-known track is the perennial live staple "Metal Thrashing Mad," as well the lesser-known thrashers "Deathrider," "Anthrax," and a cover of Alice Cooper's "I'm Eighteen." Along with Metallica's KILL 'EM ALL, Megadeth's KILLING IS MY BUSINESS, and Slayer's HAUNTING THE CHAPEL, FISTFUL OF METAL helped signal the birth of thrash metal.
