Fitna - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fitna (فتنة) is an Arabic word, generally regarded as very difficult to translate.
It is often used to refer to civil war, disagreement and division within Islam and specifically alludes to a time involving trials of faith, similar to the Tribulation in Christian eschatology.
The Second Fitna, or Second Islamic civil war, is usually identified as the 683–685 CE conflict among the Umayyads for control of the caliphate.

First Islamic civil war - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The First Islamic civil war, 656–661 CE, followed the assassination of the caliph Uthman ibn Affan, continued during the brief caliphate of Ali ibn Abu Talib, and was ended, on the whole, by Mu'awiya's assumption of the caliphate.
This civil war is often called the Fitna, and regretted as the end of the early unity of the Islamic ummah (nation).
In 656 CE, the then caliph, or Muslim leader Uthman ibn Affan, was murdered by rebellious Muslim soldiers as he sat reading the Qur'an in his home in Medina, in north-western Arabia.

 Women in the Mosque
Nadwi goes so far as to assert that those who claim that women are 'the aunts of Satan' (Shaytan ki khala) and that if they are allowed to pray in mosques all sorts of fitna would result, actually 'deny the piety and faith of their own mothers and sisters'.
Only those teachings would be applicable in later times which the scholars (fuqaha) of the schools of law (Mazaahib) of later times consider as essential, while the rest of the shari'ah would be discarded as 'impractical'.
Another flaw in the argument of his opponents, Nadwi writes, is that while those 'ulama who insist on strict taqlid of past jurisprudential precedent claim that in today's age of fitna, women should not pray in the mosque, they allow women to travel to Makkah for the Hajj pilgrimage.

This book is the translation of Volume 7 of the Kitab at-Tabaqat al-Kabir of Ibn Sa’d which deals with the Companions, Tabi’un and the subsequent generations of the people of knowledge in Basra, Baghdad, Khurasan, Syria and Egypt.
This book is of particular interest because its pages demonstrate the attitude and action of the Companions and the Tabi’un when confronted by the most dangerous of trials — fitna, or civil war.
This is extremely important in the modern age, in which fitna is commonplace, for we can learn a great deal from how the early Muslims dealt with it.

RK massacred the verse 74/31; 1.he omited the word ILLA/only/but/except,which stands in front of FITNA 2.he inserted numbering 3.and he translated fitna, that is actually a noun, as a verb(to disturb) cause all other of his alleged five functions are given in the form of the verb.
For the same purpose RK omited conjunctions waw/and between 2nd and 3rd function and between 3rd and 4th function cause in original arabic there is no conjunction waw/and between his alleged 1st and 2nd function(to make it looks as only one out of five functions).
If there was conjunction waw/and after words "but a fitna for disbelievers", only then it be possible to count "attaining certainity and inceasing faith etc" mentioned in the verse as equal functions of their number, together with its function of being "but a fitna for those who disbelieve".

Islamic literature defines fitna as "hard times," such as civil strife, war, or riots, during which evil forces attempt to weaken and even eradicate people's faith.
3- Fitna: Such troubles will spread and encourage unlawful and immoral acts among all people, both in public and in private.
Such fitna will lead to a stronger faith, an increase in patience and rewards in the Hereafter for the believers' having a solid faith, while weakening further the faith of those with weak faith.

In this connection, those traditions are worth noting which are enshrined in Sahih al-Bukhari, after the fourth Caliph, Ali ibn Abi Talib, political conflict ensued between Abdullah ibn Zubayr and the Ummayyads, Abdullah bn Umar one of the senior most companions of the prophet, held himself aloof from the battle.
From this we learn that the war against fitna was a war of limited duration, not meant to be engaged in beyond the point of its specific purpose being served.
Invoking the Quranic exhortation to do battle against fitna in order to validate acts of war which had quite other aims is highly improper.

Rita Katz & Josh Devon on al Qaeda on National Review Online
As fitna is heavily discouraged in Islam, an Islamic terrorist group carrying out attacks against fellow Muslims is likely to cause some confusion for al Qaeda's potential and current followers.
Since al Qaeda's existence depends on public support, the terrorist group must rationalize why it is waging this fitna and why Muslims are being targeted.
Previously, al Qaeda's rhetoric in justifying attacks in which Muslims were killed was to maintain that they were casualties in the pursuit of a greater cause, and that any Muslim killed in such an attack would become a martyr and therefore go to heaven.
