Fitzroy Football Club - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Fitzroy Football Club, latterly known as "the Lions", was formed in 1883 and was a foundation member club of the Victorian Football League on its inception in 1897.
The club ran into financial difficulties in the 1980s and was forced to merge with the Brisbane Bears at the end of the 1996 season to form the Brisbane Lions.
Talk of the death of the club due to financial troubles occurred as early as 1986, and in 1989 the directors agreed to almagamation with Footscray.

Fitzroy was admitted to the VFA in 1884 as the Fitzroy Senior Football Club and played from the Brunswick Street Oval.
Fitzroy won their second back to back Premiership in 1905, with Percy Trotter being named Player of the Year, an award which was essentially the equivalent of the modern Brownlow Medal.
Fitzroy's gradual improvement through the late 70's after such a long unsuccessful period was capped off in 1978 when Fitzroy shocked the football world by defeating a highly fancied North Melbourne (the reigning day premiers) by 76 points to win the Night Premiership.

 Fitzroy
The citizens of Fitzroy were keen to see a football club representing their district having witnessed the positive impact which the neighbouring Carlton club had had on that locality for many years.
Fitzroy were too good for the Pivotonians though, and when they tied with Essendon in their penultimate match it left an intriguing scenario for the final week of the season.
Fitzroy ruckman Mick Grace, who had taken numerous marks, some of them spectacular, and whose long goal in the 3rd term had effectively snuffed out the last hopes of an Essendon recovery, was awarded a gold medal as the best player afield.

Football supporters aged between 10 and 16 years were recruited by two methods: a mail-out to VFL Football Club members and an intercept survey at six VFL football grounds.
Surveys: The football supporters were asked questions about their interest in VFL football; awareness of VFL football sponsorship; participation in VFL Football Coaching Clinics; beliefs about the habits of peers, of senior students, of people aged in their 20s and of VFL footballers.
It is reassuring though that VFL footballers, when compared to people in their 20s, were perceived to be less likely to participate in habits such as smoking, eating junk food, drinking and driving, or drinking alcohol at parties.

In 1987, a survey soon after the commencement of the Fitzroy Football Club sponsorship indicated that there was strong public support for the sponsorship (Hill, 1989).
The increased awareness of football sponsorship could be attributable to improved performance by Fitzroy in 1992 or to the club's widely reported financial difficulties or to a combination of these factors, leading to greater public awareness of Fitzroy and therefore of the sponsorship.
It is apparent that football is the best known of Quit's sponsorships, which probably reflects the amount of money involved in the sponsorship, the publicity football receives and the high level of community interest in football in Victoria.
