Alerce - Fitzroya cupressoides: More Information - ARKive
The massive over-exploitation of the species caused population numbers to be decimated, and by the early 1900s a third of the Fitzroya forests had been lost (1).
Today, the coastal populations appear to be declining although the direct cause is unclear; large tracts of dead, white stems have been found, although the time of death in many of these stands is unknown (7).
Logging of Fitzroya cupressoides is prohibited throughout the range of this magnificent tree, and international trade is banned by its listing on Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) (1).

Fitzroya - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fitzroya is a genus in the cypress family Cupressaceae with only a single species, Fitzroya cupressoides native to the Andes mountains of central Chile and adjoining Argentina, where it is an important member of the Valdivian temperate rain forests.
Much larger specimens existed in the past before the species was heavily logged in the 19th and 20th centuries; Charles Darwin reported finding a specimen 12.6 m in diameter, which, if accurately measured, would have made it the stoutest tree ever measured anywhere in the world.
A team of researchers from the University of Tasmania found fossilized foliage of Fitzroya on the Lea River of northwest Tasmania.

Fitzroya forests have a unique composition and structure and a high ecological value.
In the Chilean Coastal Range between 40º S and 43º S, the expansion of protected areas of Fitzroya is an agreed national priority.
In particular, the Fitzroya forests with very old, giant trees growing on fragile sites around the Reloncaví Estuary in the Chilean Andes should be declared a Protected Area.

THE USE AND CONSERVATION OF FITZROYA CUPRESSOIDES (ALERCE) FORESTS IN CHILE
Fitzroya cupressoides (alerce) is a long-lived conifer endemic to the temperate rainforests of southern Chile (39°50' to 43°30'S) and portions of adjacent Argentina.
Fitzroya may live for over 3,600 years, reaching 5 m in diameter and 50 m in height.
Therefore, Fitzroya is considered a threatened species; cutting of living trees is prohibited and it is listed under CITES Appendix I, forbidding its international trade.

Yes, CITES does list Fitzroya but if one is importing small quantities of seed for horticultural, not commercial, purposes then the ban does not apply(I think).
I also noted with surprise that I have seven of nine of the Chilean native conifers, quite without planning; A. araucana, Autrocedrus chilensis, F cuppresoides, Pilgerodendron, Prumnopitys andina, Podocarpus salignus and Saxothegea conspicua lacking a Lepidothamnus and Podocarpus sp.
My Fitzroya, such as it is, is quite beautiful and I'd encourage you guys to try a few more in protected locations; perhaps you'll be rewarded as I have.

 Cupressaceae description
Fitzroya cupressoides, with Sequoiadendron giganteum a close second.
Although the Pinaceae continue to account for the majority of dendrochronological work, a great deal has nonetheless been done with the Cupressaceae, particularly in the genera Fitzroya, Juniperus, Sequoiadendron, and Thuja.
The heartwood of many species of Cupressaceae is resistant to termite damage and fungal decay, and therefore it is widely used in contact with soil [e.g., for fenceposts].
