The museum was founded in 1816 from a bequest of Richard, the 7th Viscount Fitzwilliam of Merrion to the University of Cambridge.
The Fitzwilliam Museum is funded partly by the University of Cambridge, and partly through endowments, trust funds and charitable donations.
Its purpose is to supplement the museum's very meagre purchase grant, and to run a lively programme of private viewings, tours, concerts and lectures for its members, who also volunteer their time for guiding and educational purposes.

Apollo: Quiet triumph for the Fitzwilliam: on 1 June, the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge unveils a major addition to its buildings.
The Fitzwilliam's place in the affections of so many across the world means there is an unusually acute interest in the unveiling on 1 June of a major addition to its buildings.
There is a striking contrast between the confidence and success of the museum's building projects up to the mid-twentieth century and the hesitancy and indecision that has marked its architectural development from then until now.

The Fitzwilliam needs new and better accommodation for some of its priceless collections as well as the facilities expected of a museum at the end of the 20th century.
But this autumn the Museum's application for a development grant was turned down on the grounds that the scheme was too ambitious and too expensive.
The Museum chose to celebrate the 150th anniversary in the autumn with exhibitions showing the strength of its collections and focussing on some of the major benefactors, from the Founder, the Viscount Fitzwilliam, onwards.

The Fitzwilliam Museum houses the collections of art and antiquities of the University of Cambridge.
The closure of part of the Museum, due to its Courtyard Development Project has provided the National Gallery with a unique opportunity to borrow a group of Italian, Dutch and Flemish masterpieces painted between the mid 16th and 18th centuries to form this special exhibition.
These paintings represent major strengths of the Fitzwilliam Museum's collection, as well as its history, by closely reflecting the interests of its founder, Richard, 7th Viscount Fitzwilliam of Merrion (1745-1816), whose own bequests may not be lent from the Museum.

Art Fund Campaign Detail   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
The triumphant acquisition of the Macclesfield Psalter in early 2005 by the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, was the culmination of an intensive campaign and public appeal launched by the Art Fund and conducted in close collaboration with the Fitzwilliam.
Unknown and unrecorded until its discovery in 2003 by Sotheby’s in the library of the Earl of Macclesfield, the manuscript excited the interest of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge — as the Psalter was produced in East Anglia in the early 14th century.
Following discussions with the Fitzwilliam Museum, the Art Fund decided to launch a public campaign to save the Psalter for the museum and called on the HLF Trustees to reconsider their decision.

NEW YORK.- The Fitzwilliam Museum at Cambridge University possesses one of the finest collections of Renaissance and Baroque bronzes in Great Britain, and this February a group of thirty-six of them will be seen for the first time together in America in a presentation at New York’s Frick Collection.
Dating from the turn of the sixteenth century to the early years of the eighteenth century — the period that saw the flowering of the bronze statuette as an independent art form — the sculptures are remarkable for their exquisite beauty and refinement.
The Fitzwilliam’s Perfume Burner, the Lid with a Funerary Genius is an example of the exquisite functional bronzes produced by the uncle-nephew team of Vincenzo and Gian Girolamo Grandi, who worked in sixteenth-century Renaissance Padua and Trent.

Contemporary Review: Picture galleries outside London: the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge
It will be generally conceded that to visit Cambridge by motor car is foolhardy.
The Fitzwilliam Museum may be reached in a short walk from the railway station if one turns left in the Hills Road at the Church of Our Lady, which compensates for its lack of antiquity with a plenitude of gargoyles, then right into Trumpington Street, with its clear runnels of water in the gutters.
There stands the Fitzwilliam Museum in its squat neoclassical aplomb, a little below the architectural marvels of Kings Parade, as a memorial to Richard, Seventh Viscount Fitzwilliam, who left 144 pictures to the university in 1816, including five formerly in the collection of Queen Christina of Sweden.
