Chang Cheh - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Chang Cheh (張徹; pinyin:Zhāng Chè) (February 10, 1923 – June 22, 2002) was Shaw Brothers Studio's best known and most prolific film director, with such films as the Five Deadly Venoms, the Brave Archer (based on the works of Jin Yong), the One-Armed Swordsman, and other classics of wuxia and wushu film.
His films from this period, including Five Deadly Venoms, Kid with the Golden Arm, and Crippled Avengers, feature a heavy influence from the wuxia movie genre, and are considered his most popular films in the west -- not counting 1982's Superninjas, aka Five Element Ninja, aka Chinese Superninjas.
Chang was a pioneer of what is known by some as "heroic bloodshed"; films that emphasize brotherhood, loyalty and honor, and several of his films, including Vengeance, Boxer From Shantung and Chinatown Kid, can be seen as clear influences on the later work of directors such as John Woo and Ringo Lam.

Although Five Deadly Venoms isn't the first film the clan made together (they all appeared in Chinatown Kid a year earlier), this was the film that made them stars and won their way into the hearts of many old school film fans.
Five Deadly Venoms may be fairly conservative with the amount of actual fighting there is, but that doesn't detract anything from the quality as I've pointed out.
Five Deadly Venoms goes beyond just the clutchings of a mere Kung Fu film, if you want to think of it in that light it's fine, but Five Venoms is a great 'film', not just for any individual genre.

But it was their 1978 film, FIVE DEADLY VENOMS, which took them to the next level in the international arena—and in particular the North American marketplace.
The other Venoms know nothing about him and neither do the audience, as he really only shows up in the conclusion (though he is talked about all through FIVE DEADLY VENOMS).
FIVE DEADLY VENOMS is simply a must see film that holds up to repeat viewings, though the elements of intrigue won’t be as powerful, since you’ll know the ending.

The Five Deadly Venoms are perhaps the most famous of the Iron Palm training methods.
The centipede, snake, scorpion, lizard, and toad are regarded as the Five Deadly Venoms in Chinese history, also known as the Five Noxious Creatures.
This preparation was made by puting the centipede, snake, scorpion, lizard, and toad in a pot, whereupon the creatures gradually ate each other up, and the corpse that was found when the pot was opened was supposed to contain the noxious venoms of all five.

The five Venoms are of course in the city, and some of them are after Old Master, Jr.'s money.
If you're hoping for a bunch of scenes where the Venoms beat on each other in the cute little masks, you'll be mightily disappointed because only Scorpion wears his throughout the movie and when he finally fights someone, it is without the mask.
This guy had no personality, unlike all the Venoms, who were easily memorable and believable (well as believable as anyone can be when they do centipede kung fu) and he didn't do much in the movie.

The Five Deadly Venoms were five men who'd strip off their shirts at the drop of a hat, with Peking Opera training, and martial arts skills that allowed them to spend more time off the ground than on it.
The Chang/Venom team-up is as classic a pairing of director and actor as Josef Von Sternberg and Marlene Dietrich; Chang Cheh had found his soulmates, the Venoms, and the Venoms had found their visionary, Chang Cheh.
Exotic weaponry is brought to bear against the seemingly indestructible bodies of the Five Venoms as they are crippled, learn martial arts, and then have their weaknesses exploited by their enemies in an exhausting series of end battles.

The murky lair in which the Venoms are taught their styles is cool enough, but the Venoms in their crazy masks are one of the coolest images in film ever.
Regardless, Five Venoms is regarded as a classic for a reason, and I've rated it as such.

Cast as the Snake (# 2), he is known to many as the "sixth" Venom for he only appeared in a few other films with the Venoms crew.
Usually portrayed as the hero in many of the Venoms films, he continues to work in the global film industry; even landing a small part in a 007 film.

Five Deadly Venoms tells the tale of a martial arts master who commands a student to track down some of his other students and get them to stop those that have used their skills for nefarious ends.
GreenCine Staff Pick: The Five Deadly Venoms, a.k.a., Wu Du, is not an Animal Planet show, but instead one of the great, and unsung, martial arts films of the 70s - or any era.
The film has an almost perfectly simple set-up: five disciples, "The Centipede," "The Snake," "The Scorpion," "The Lizard," and "The Toad," are summoned by their former teacher, who is worried that his pupils are using their talents for evil.

Certainly one of the best known of the martial arts films, FIVE DEADLY VENOMS contains one of the best openings of any of the Shaw Brothers films, but on a second (or tenth viewing as the case may be) it certainly doesn't always live up to the glory of the opening.
The final sequence where the remaining Venoms battle it out is a long and exciting masterpiece of choreography, with some impressive special effects tossed in.

The setup of a student uncovering the five mysterious "venoms" is promising but gets quickly sidelined by a political-corruption plot that bogs down the film's midsection with courtroom scenes that bring its momentum screeching to a halt.
As a result, Five Deadly Venoms has less martial arts action than it could have had, and its pacing lacks the zip of other Shaw Brothers kung-fu classics like Five Fingers of Death.
Ultimately, Five Deadly Venoms is too convoluted and awkwardly paced to appeal to non-martial arts fans but offers up enough eccentric thrills to please the genre's hardcore enthusiasts.

RETURN OF THE FIVE DEADLY VENOMS is an excellently paced out Kung Fu fiesta, far superior to the somewhat slower FIVE DEADLY VENOMS, and featuring much more action.
While lacking a certain realism (of a sort) that can be found in later HK cop and modern day films, the performers in these films had to work much harder and perform much better than the later stunt laden films.

The five men referred to as Venoms are Sun Chien, Kuo Chui, Lu Feng, Lo Meng, and Chiang Sheng, because the five of them appeared in fourteen films together, their first being 1977's The Chinatown Kid (which debuted Sun Chien and Lo Meng).
Wei Pai, however, was not regularly utilized in the Venoms cycle of films (he appeared in only four of them: The Five Deadly Venoms, The Kid with the Golden Arm, Ten Tigers of Kuangtung, and The Unbeatable Dragon), whereas Chiang Sheng was.
I have chosen to not consider a movie with only two Venoms in it to be a "Venoms film." Some people disagree with this decision, but I find that it makes things easier, since very little is known about two-Venoms films made after 1981 such as Fight Among the Supers.

The five men referred to as Venoms are Sun Chien, Kuo Chui, Lu Feng, Lo Meng, and Chiang Sheng, because the five of them appeared in fourteen films together, their first two being 1977's The Chinatown Kid and Heaven and Hell (aka Shaolin Hellgate).
Curiously, one of the Venoms in this film was played by an actor named Wei Pai, while the central protagonist, Chiang Sheng, played a non-Venom (or a hybrid-Venom, if you will) trained by the Venoms' teacher.
There was another actor, by the name of Yu Tai Ping, who appeared in all (!) the Venoms films, but since he almost exclusively played lackies, junior bad guys, and other underlings (his role in Super Ninjas being the major exception), he is even less recognized as a Venom than Wei Pai.
