Calvinism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The five solas are a summary of Calvinism, indeed of the Reformation, in the sense that they delineate the difference between the evangelical doctrine of salvation from the Roman Catholic doctrine.
Calvinist theology is often identified in the popular mind as the so-called "five points of Calvinism," which are a summation of the judgments (or canons) rendered by the Synod of Dort and which were published in the "quinquarticular controversy" as a point-by-point response to the five points of the Arminian Remonstrance.
An additional point of disagreement with Arminianism implicit in the five points is the doctrine of Jesus' substitutionary atonement as a punishment for the sins of the elect, which was developed by St. Augustine and especially St.

Justification (that is, becoming guiltless before God) comes through faith only, not good works, though in the classical protestant scheme, saving faith will always be accompanied by good works.
This doctrine is directly opposed to the teaching of the Catholic Church that scripture can only be authentically interpreted through Holy Apostolic Tradition by the Magisterium (that is, the Pope and bishops at church councils).
This doctrine is sometimes called the formal cause of the Reformation because it was the underlying cause of disagreement over sola fide.

The Five Solas are five Latin phrases (or slogans) that emerged during the Protestant Reformation and summarize the Reformer's basic beliefs and emphasis in contradistinction to the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church of the day.

Over six years, five albums and many tours, the five-piece Solas made its reputation as an Irish band putting a modern spin on traditional sounds and material.
Horan wrote the slow, noir-ish "Maybe in a Prayer" and she and Egan together composed the catchy "Charmy Chaplin." Accordionist McAuley added the original "Beck Street." And as with the cover songs, the original instrumentals on the whole add a downbeat tone to the album.
Solas has incorporated several of the songs from "The edge of Silence" into their set, but only those that translate well into live performance.

I agree wholeheartedly with the five solas, though I encourage those who follow the Reformation tradition to understand them as the Reformers understood them -- which is not always the same as how they are taught in contemporary Protestant churches.
The "five points" were first defined in the Canons of Dordt, the affirmation of a Reformed synod held in 1619, a generation after John Calvin's death.

The material principle of the Reformation was Sola Fide, meaning "by Faith alone." This was the material or substance of the preaching of the Reformers.
Sola fide then was the belief that faith alone is the instrument of justification without any meritorious works of man added to it.

This is not to say that one cannot be saved if from ignorance he does not know these, but that these five things are of foundational importance to the faith.

Through this series I will introduce the five topics, provide their historical and contemporary contexts, show their biblical bases, and provide some ideas of how they can and should impact the lives of believers today.
