August 98 - Catch a Mobile Data Network to Go
By using a commercial wireless provider, your agency avoids investing significant cost and time constructing a fixed, private infrastructure (for most private systems, the fixed infrastructure can account for 40 percent to 60 percent of the total one-time costs of a wireless data system).
Commercial wireless networks are pushing the limits of wireless network bandwidth and data throughput, providing an attractive alternative for data-intensive applications.
Data Network to Go any jurisdictions around the country are realizing the benefits of public-safety mobile data systems.

Wireless Fidelity - Speakeasy To Test High-Speed Wireless in Seattle
WiMax is a new high-speed fixed wireless data transmission standard, also called 802.16e, after the committee of the IEEE that developed the standard.
According to Speakeasy, downtown Seattle brings to the test environment "challenging geography and intense business demand for broadband services." Seattle is also an area with a rainy climate, which has sometimes been an impediment to the use of fixed-wireless technologies.
The Speakeasy deployment in Seattle plans to offer initially speeds of 3mbps for both download and upload of data, and will include a service-level agreement for certain business applications.

Unstrung - Enter the MAN Haters - Wireless Networking News Analysis
The 802.16a standard calls for a fixed, non-line-of-sight wireless standard that can operate in the 2GHz to 11GHz bands, transferring data at up to 70 Mbit/s over a range of up to 30 miles, quite different from the intent of the 802.20 working group.
However, the 802.16e working group is intending to add some degree of mobility support to the fixed wireless standard (see MANs to Go Walkabout).
These are the kinds of capabilities that a broadband wireless standard now has to support, Subramanian says.

The 802.15.3 standard for high-rate wireless personal-area networks (WPAN) allows networks to link as many as 245 wireless fixed and portable devices at data rates of up to 55Mbit/sec.
The 802.15.3 standard allows networks based on this specification to coexist with other 802.15 WPANs, such as Bluetooth systems, and with 802.11 wireless LANs, especially 802.11b and 802.11g, which also operate in the 2.4-GHz band.
The new WPAN standard uses the 2.4-GHz unlicensed frequency band and specifies raw data rates of 11M, 22M, 33M, 44M and 55Mbit/sec.

 IEC: Wireless Local Loop (WLL)
Sometimes called radio in the loop (RITL) or fixed-radio access (FRA), WLL is a system that connects subscribers to the public switched telephone network (PSTN) using radio signals as a substitute for copper for all or part of the connection between the subscriber and the switch.
In developed economies, WLL will help unlock competition in the local loop, enabling new operators to bypass existing wireline networks to deliver POTS and data access.
So the question isn't will the local loop go wireless, but when and where.

Finally, there is a more complex strategy that covers all the others, seeking to take advantage of the combination of the different networks (fixed analogue plus DSL plus wireless broadband plus TV plus cellular), of voice-data-image signals, and of synchronous/asynchronous transmissions to invent new services.
Fixed telephony services and their operators, especially the incumbents, who have hitherto derived a significant share of their revenues (and their profits!) in this segment, seem to have reached a turning point in their history.
Moreover, in regard to operating profitability, it has been possible to maintain a comparatively high margin in fixed telephony, and despite investments and therefore the accompanying amortisation in the case of cellular networks, break-even point in the mobile sector was reached fairly quickly.
