Fixed Gear Bicycles for the Road
The idea is that, most of the time you would ride the fixed gear, but if you found your self far from home and getting tired, or were in unusually hilly terrain, you would turn the wheel around and use the freewheel.
I have set up a couple of mountain bikes with flip-flop hubs, so that I get a fixed gear on one side and two different freewheel gears on the other.
The higher your gear, the more desirable it is to have a brake on your bike..

 Angular Motion Translator Disclosure
Since the initial annulus gear is fixed to the secondary annulus (2) gear in the same assembly (3), the secondary annulus gear will also rotate, forcing the rotation of the planet gears of the secondary planet gear assembly (7).
The Planetary Gear Assemblies, (3 and 4), have each an equal number of planetary gears, and the rotating axis of pairs of planet gears matched between the two Planetary Gear Assemblies is fixed into a mounting/bearing assembly, (5), that is free to rotate about the primary axis.
The two annulus gears, (1 and 2), are fixed into one assembly, (3), so that they will rotate together.

I’m positive that it was a fixed gear bike he was riding, not only because they are more often than not the choice of messengers, but also because I remember seeing him pedaling when he sped up and when he slowed down, which took me by surprise.
Fixed gear riders never have to think about how much or little they are coasting because it is quite literally not an option.
(Fixed gear bikes do have cousins called single speeds, which are basically fixed gear bikes with a freewheel instead of a fixed cog.

While the above is the proportion of the several gears, as shown in the accompanying drawings, it is to be understood that by varying the relative sizes of the gears to a limited degree the speed of the power-transmitting shaft may also be varied with respect to the driving-shaft.
In combination, a rotary driving-shaft, a power-transmitting sleeve, two drums and a train of gears for connecting the shaft, drums and sleeve comprising six gears, and means for arresting one or the other of the drums to cause the shaft to drive the sleeve in the same or the reverse direction.
The gears shown in the accompanying drawings are proportioned as follows: The gear 12, carried by the power-transmitting sleeve 2, is provided with thirty teeth.

Preparing for classes at FORM Fitness
Fixed gear forces the rider to work throughout the entire pedal stroke, which translates into more work for the time spent on the bike. For example: 1 hour on a fixed gear is equal to 2-3 hours on a standard bike.
The main reasons why a fixed gear can not be used everyday is the fact that it only has 1 gear and that it puts too much pressure on the riders’ legs, which over a long period of time can result in injury.
Indoor cycling bikes were born from “Fixed gear road bikes.”  A fixed gear bike is a bike that has one gear in the back.

It's true that a freewheel or fixed gear run on a road wheel sits toward the center because the wheel is dished to account for all those gears.
Meanwhile, a "fixed gear" or "track" bike (most people use these terms interchangeably) is a road-style bike originally intended for use on special, flat racing tracks.
These gears will thread on to any old (non-cassette) road wheel, but that doesn't "fix" it as such - the ability to slow down or lock the wheel with your legs is dependent upon a reverse-threaded lock ring that you'll only find on a true track hub, such as the fine Suntour Superbe Pro Custom.

 Metroactive Features Fixed-Gear Bikes
Being on a fixed gear is touted as providing a mystic connection to the bike and the road, a communion of man and machine.
The hands-on experience of actually riding a fixed gear is what has most riders hooked, and many of them dust off the old saying that if you try it once, you'll never go back.
He, too, has been into mountain biking lately, though he still sometimes rides a fixed gear and counsels the new breed of enthusiasts.

Paul Makepeace's On: Cycling: Fixed Gear
Changing gear on a fixed is time-consuming and can require some serious exertion although nothing a bike-shop couldn't help with.
Changing gears is not a frequent activity – start low and every few months as strength and skill improve try a higher gear until it's comfortable.
I do recommend starting out with a gear that almost seems too low, and generally sticking to a gear where cruising is at a relatively higher crank rate.

Road bikes are frequently converted to fixed gear by either replacing the cassette with a single gear or replacing the rear hub with a track hub.
Fixed Gears are commonly built with a front hand brake or brakeless.
Fixed Gear Fixed Gear bicycles are built without derailleurs, freewheels or freehubs.

Scoplaw: How to Make a Fixed Gear with J.B. Weld
If you have a a fixed gear off the ground and start it spinning (say to check the brakes), the inertia of the rear wheel will cause the chain (and front cranks) to keep moving.
You should have an immobile gear permanently fixed to the hub.

Fixed gear parts are not carried at most shoppes, nor is good ol' Pista gear, as such a shoppe which does carry this gear specifically can only do better than average with the fixie community.
Fixed gears are awesome, simple, and building them is a good lesson in bike mechanic skills.
By teaching people to fix their bikes we may be eliminating good paying customers, but we provide a space where they can use tools that they don't have to buy.

Racers might have flip-flop hubs with additional gears, or a cog that could be shifted by manually repositioning the chain.
And if you are properly geared for a given stretch of pavement you may as well be riding a Seven Odonata Carbon/Ti with full Record gruppo.
All those extra gears and changing apparatus added weight, but the bloody things already weighed as much as a small horse and now at least you could go somewhere.

That way I can get the fixed gear out of my system, but if it ends up too difficult for me or if I just don't like it, it would be an easy conversion to a single speed commuter.
I think maybe the fetishization of fixed gear riding had made it seem much more intimidating than it actually is.
I would rather keep my single speed as a commuter and have a dedicated fixed gear to learn on, instead of constantly having to flip my wheel until I feel comfortable enough to ride fixed in city traffic.

 KATU 2 - Portland, Oregon
Propelled by its pedals and only by its pedals (it can't coast), the fixed gear, in the age of the high-tech mountain bike, has come to be seen by many as a monument to the original idea of the bicycle.
Now, fixed gears are so ubiquitous among Portland's punk rock hipster culture that bike mechanic Doug Moak describes what he calls a "blueprint" for a fixed-gear bike and a "uniform" for many of those riding them.
It was standard for racers to practice in the winter on a fixed gear, since it worked you harder over a shorter amount of time and there was little grit to clean up after a ride.

MacAddict Forums / Fixed gear biking for everyday use?
Anyways, the reason fixed gears are hugely popular in cities throughout the world is that they are fun, easy to maintain, often cheap, simple and slick.
There is a reason you pretty much only see fixed gear bikes in track racing, its because they suck and are DANGEROUS for any other use, particularly street riding where good effective brakes may be the difference between life or death.
Hey, Pariah, have you ever ridden a fixed gear?

Fixed gear bikes, and the mentality that has popularized them, are troubling.
One nice option any one looking into a fixed gear bike for transportation should take a look at would be a "flip-flop" hub.
I remember when single gear bikes were the standard, except for the lucky ones who had the three-speed in-hub shifters.

Fixed gear bicycles are especially popular among bicycle messenger (additional info and facts about bicycle messenger) s, who prefer them for their light weight, simplicity and maneuverability when used by a skilled rider (see track stand (additional info and facts about track stand)).
A fixed-gear bicycle, also known as a fixie, is a single speed bicycle (additional info and facts about single speed bicycle) without a freewheel (A clutch (as on the rear wheel of a bicycle) that allows wheels to turn freely (as in coasting)).
The cog (Tooth on the rim of gear wheel) is 'fixed' to the hub (The central part of a car wheel (or fan or propeller etc) through which the shaft or axle passes), usually secured by a reverse-thread lockring.

Is riding a single speed freewheel bike going to give you much the same training benefit as the fixed gear, (except for terror on the downhills?) I assume the number one reason for a fixed gear is for maximum power transfer and the second reason would be for safety in the pack.
In response to the call for queries, I'd appreciate input on riding fixed gear bikes.

The other thing I don't get is "no brakes." I asked a guy with a fixed gear bike I met at my LBS recently how he braked and he said he either resists the turning of the pedals or he drags his feet on the ground.
I talked to a knowledgable mechanic at my local bike shop who told me the technique used by fixed geared bikers to stop: somehow the cyclist bounces the rear wheel into the air and during that moment he is able to freeze the pedals with very little momentum on the wheel to prevent this.
