Flag (computing) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Flags are typically found as members of a defined data structure, such as a database record, and the meaning of the value contained in a flag will generally be defined in relation to the data structure it is part of.
Microprocessors typically have, for example, a status register that is composed of such flags, and the flags are used to indicate various post-operation conditions, such as when there has been an arithmetic overflow.
It has been suggested that the term was derived from the small flags on the mailboxes used for delivery of letters and small shipments in rural and suburban areas of the USA, which are customarily raised by the postman as an indication that new mail is in.

By nature humanities computing communicates among the disciplines; by nature it challenges issues of ownership, which is to say, reveals that many are held in common and there is much to be gained from sharing them.
Computer science is a special case that is curently under discussion at least in the United States.
The area of cyberculture is often pursued by those with too little knowledge of computing, but it does suggest a host of research questions concerning the computer as a cultural object, the history of computing technology (or, more broadly, automata as a whole) and the sociology of knowledge as it is affected by computing.

The act of flag burning (the kind that makes everyone angry, as opposed to, say, the ceremonial retirement, by burning, of worn flags conducted by veterans' and fraternal organizations) is obviously conduct, but there can be no doubt that it is conduct intended to communicate a message.
Flag burning is a political statement, and should be allowed in the 'land of the free'.

A little-known subdivision is the study of computer engineering technology, which studies the techniques and applications of computer engineering with less emphasis on the mathematical and scientific theory.
From a computer science perspective, a computer engineer is a software architect with a focus on the interaction between software programs and the underlying hardware architecture.
Since computer engineers are mainly focused on electronics and computers, their courseloads tend to involve fewer courses on natural sciences such as statics or dynamics (mechanics) than traditional engineering programs.

The first flag indicates whether the data are valid to read and the second flag indicates whether the data can be overwritten.
When the process running on the compute node needs to read or write from its own shared space, it tests the flags without acquiring the lock; as a result it tests its own presumably cached copy of the flag.
When the compute process needs to issue a remote read or remote write request it places its request in a fifo queue in shared memory.

Roemerman on Record: Broadcast flag killed…for now
This trend of forceful Digital Rights Management is concerning because it shifts the balance of power away from the consumer and toward media and content providers who are not interested in “Fair use.” Tyrannical computing is a good example of this shift in power away from the consumer.
It appears that the court ruled that the FCC did not have the power to implement this flag, not that it is inherently unconstitutional or a validation of consumer rights.
The proponents of this broadcast flag are expected to lobby lawmakers, in attempts to legislate this broadcast flag into being.

Diagnosing Java Code: The Null Flag bug pattern
As you might have guessed, I call this pattern the Null Flag bug pattern because it is caused by inconsistently using null pointers as flags for exceptional conditions.
Despite their common occurrence, the use of null flags is very often unwarranted (as in the case above).
The use of null flags, on the other hand, limits control flow to the ordinary paths of method invocation and return (until the whole program crashes, of course).

Computer security is undeniably important, and as new vulnerabilities are discovered and exploited, the perceived need for new security solutions grows.
"Trusted computing" initiatives propose to solve some of today's security problems through hardware changes to the personal computer.
Changing hardware design isn't inherently suspicious, but the leading trusted computing proposals have a high cost: they provide security to users while giving third parties the power to enforce policies on users' computers against the users' wishes -- they let others pressure you to hand some control over your PC to someone else.
