The flag of Alaska consists of eight gold stars, forming the Big Dipper and the North Star, on a dark blue field.
It was designed in 1927 by Benny Benson, a 13-year-old Alaska Native residing in Seward, for a contest to create a flag for the then-Alaska Territory.
The design was chosen unanimously and adopted as the territorial flag that year, and became the state flag upon statehood in 1959.

Alaska's Flag were written by Marie Drake, a long-time employee of the Alaska Department of Education, and first appeared as a poem in 1935.
When Alaska changed from district to territorial status in 1912, the new designation was substituted on the seal.The Constitution of the State of Alaska provides that the territorial seal shall be the seal for the State of Alaska, with the word "territory" changed to that of "state." The seal is 2 1/8 inches in diameter.

On May 2, 1927, the Alaska Legislature officially adopted 13-year-old John Ben "Benny" Benson's Alaska flag -- "eight stars of gold on a field of blue." Benson had submitted his design in a 1926 American Legion contest for Alaska students.
The bill adopting the flag stipulated that Benson's design was selected "for its simplicity, its originality and its symbolism." The Legislature had the grace to incorporate much of Benson's poetic language into the bill, and this later became the basis for the stirring lyrics of the Alaska Flag song.
