The flag of Asturias shows the "Cruz de la Victoria" (Victory Cross).
According to legend, this flag was flown by Don Pelayo (later King Pelayo), in the decisive Battle of Covadonga against the Moors in 722.
This battle, fought in the mountains of Asturias was recognized as the start of the "Reconquista" or Re-conquest of Spain from Moorish domination.

The flag reported by Dov Gutterman is that of Andecha Astur, an Asturian nationalist / independentist movement.
Ensame Nacionalista Astur used the Asturian flag with Covadonga [or Victory] cross without Alpha and Omega and with red star in canton (as the image [of Andecha Astur] reported by Dov Gutterman), but only in political meetings because the official flag of the party was white with fl emblem in center.
The light blue flag with red star was used by several groups in the transition period [1975-mid 1980's].

Gijón, which is the largest town in Asturias (just bigger than the capital Oviedo), has an impressive bagpipe museum "museo de la gaita", containing dozens of examples of bagpipes from every corner of Europe and the middle east.
But none of their live performances prepared me for how lovely this CD is. It is a mix of traditional Asturian tunes and gorgeous songs.

Hernández Mateo has also sent the local Asturias Centre a letter congratulating its members and letting them know that the Principality of Asturias flag will flutter in the Torrevieja Town Hall for the next three days.
