For the colonial badge of British Columbia, Musgrave chose the crest from the Royal Arms, a crowned lion atop a crown, with the minor addition of the flanking letters, B and C. However, approved it was, and on October 9, 1870, Governor Musgrave inaugurated his flag, the first distinctive and official flag for British Columbia.
In Canada, the vice-regal flag badges were surrounded by a wreath of maple leaves; in British Columbia, still a colony, the flag badge was surrounded, as was standard British practice, by a wreath of laurel.
In the centre of a Union Flag, it bore the royal crest flanked by B and C and surrounded by a laurel wreath.

The flag has a alternative white and red crown on a 1.5m flag in my collection.
I can see that a white/red crown on the red/white cross might be easier to manufacture (a little) but there's already golden yellow on the sun, so the manufacturer already has 4 colours (5 if you include the fl outlines to the sun and the crown).
The reason for the "shadow stripe" is that most of the older versions of the coat-of-arms show this shading on the shield; many flag manufacturers have copied it directly.
